Can't print to Canon MP640 using lan connection from my Imac (OS X 10.5.8)

Hi,
I'm a Mac virgin. Purchased a 24" Imac last week as well as a Canon MP640 Multi Function Printer. I've got everything up and running except for the printer. The computer recognizes the printer and i can scan but can't print. When i try printing everything seems to be working with the computer communicating to the printer, then i get an Error 306 - communications. I've been to the canon website and downloaded what i believed to be the latest driver for the printer, yet it still doesn't work. My son's Macbook Pro has the same problem trying to print using airport express.

Can someone help me resolve this issue ?

Cheers,
Pete...

FINAL POST ON THE SUBJECT........

Just installed the Canon CD onto two brand new iMac 24" machines running 10.5.8.

Software found the printer straight away (wirelessly), so......

It looks like the 'key' here is altering the printer's network setup via your browser and the CUPS interface ( as per my first post ).

Neither iMac had any patches added - just what was on the CD.

There is something odd about the printer's default configuration - maybe its the name as I have problems in this respect before when trying to set up a Mac print server - and the naming convention resolved it.

So, get the printer out of the box - unpack it - do the basics - get it on your WL network - note its (Dynamic) IP address, put this into your browser, - change it to a static address if you want (might help), alter the name etc (as per originalpost) and save.

Run the canon software.....

When it gets to the register the printer stage (forget scanner), wait until the Mac's add-printer window pops up - select the new (Bonjour) name you gave it.................. wait for 20 secs.............. when the mac finds the driver this initiates a 2nd option for the same printer to appear but under canonijnetwork protocol.

Select this new 'canonijnetwork' option and click 'ADD'

That should be it.

Bye for now.
