interface error: 5 the connection is not stable

I have a week old iMac 21.5 inch late '09 model and I have a problem burning dvds
with Toast 10 & Popcorn 3.

I get an interface error: 5
the connection is not stable.

Then the disc is not burn and I end up with a coaster.

I don't have this problem when I use my Macbook in 10.5.8 using these programs.

Is this an OS problem or a Roxio problem??

Can someone help me out??

Thanks

iMac (late '09), Macbook (late '08), Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Yep... forgot to mention.

When the disk having the " Interface error - Connection unstable " the DVD is totally Stuck in the drive.... nothing Eject, Eject from menu or Keyboard does not work anymore. It's very hard to get the disk out !

Have to Shut down or Log-Out and try anything... then after 10 tries it maybe comes out. Don't put it in again or you will have the same problem all over again. Not many problems with Disk utility... but Disk Utility does not do 25% what Toast can do... Writing Compressed DVD files etc.

I had some success killing Toast (that sounds weird) using Force-Quit. (to get the disc to eject) (Toast is totally frozen at this point. If you're lucky, Toast will restart itself and when closing Toast normally, the Disc is ejected)

I have some more info to report as well. I was able to burn a disc using Nero in VMWare Fusion without any troubles as well.

So, I am pointing the finger at Toast at this point. Or at least at how Toast interacts with Snow Leopard.

Totally agree...
The worst part is that the disc gets stuck in the burner and you have to jump through several hoops to get it to eject.

very frustrating.

I've owned several macs in the past and have never had a problem like this before!
---------------------

I can't believe that this isn't a hardware problem. Toast works well on our other computers with the same set of circumstances but 10.5 OS.
I returned the first iMac 27" within 14 days - my new Time Capsule messed up by all the data that had stored from the first dead 27" which was another frustration as I had to buy another 2TB Hard disk to do Time Machine on the new 27". At first Toast (updated to 10 to overcome any issues of older software!) it burned okay then the error 5 start again. Couldn't eject even after two restarts.. Spinning disk utility then after a restart and unable to push eject and Disk utility again I get the message "Eject Failed - The disk HL-DT.." could not be unmounted".. Maker sure that all apps and files are closed on this disk.. This is repeated umpteen times.
So Toast fails - it happens but NOT THE OS PROBLEMS IN THE FINDER - not being able to eject the Disk after a restart is catastrophic. Next try another ID and AT LAST... the message The Disk is not readable Eject comes up and it works..

How is it 2 BRAND new 27" macs have exactly the same problem.. Come on Apple I think new disk drives might need installing before you have a huge class action. I have wasted so much time on this new computer trying to fix things.. I have NEVER had such a bad apple experience as this.

WIth EyeTV - I don't think you can use anything except Toast to do the burns to DVDs.

Shouting? I Called Apple 5 times, drove 2 x 160 Miles and back, to ABQ to swap iMacs 27". Spent 3 days installing. The service is not what it used to be.
What else can you do, but shout, nobody reacts. I am frustrated.
Roxio says it's a hardware problem. Apple says it's Roxio.
There is simply no opther Application that burns compressed DVD's.

Would not be surprised if Apple had to Recall Thousands of iMacs....
At least someone could admit the problem.... Either Roxio or Apple.

Hope they can do a Firmware repair. Or else we have a hardware problem here like the striped/cracked screens.

Yup, same problem. Just adding my name to the list.

Originally began with my old version of Toast 8.0.3 - which still works fine at work on my G5 running Leopard 10.5.8 with internal OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A (ATA Bus).
Bottom of the Toast window showed "HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N - unknown bus".
Burn failed with "Interface Error: 5. The connection is not stable."

Upgraded to Toast 8.0.3.
Bottom of the Toast window showed "HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N - SATA".
But burn still failed with "Interface Error: 5. The connection is not stable."

Installed Toast 10.0.4.
Bottom of the Toast window showed "HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N - SATA".
Burn failed with "Interface Error: 5. The connection is not stable."

Toast fails each and every time -- doesn't get past the lead-in stage. I'd just like to know if it's an Apple problem or a Roxio problem.

Version 10.0.5 didn't appear to work for pimhelmy (see earlier post). But I'm willing to give it a try. I'm not holding my breath though.

Another thing I found after I tried to install Toast was that my Suitcase Fusion 2 preferences became corrupt. I don't know what one has to do with the other but after my Toast installs, I had to trash all the Extensis Suitcase preferences in the User folder to get it working properly again. I kept getting "OS activation error" with certain fonts. Bloody frustrating.
