interface error: 5 the connection is not stable

I have a week old iMac 21.5 inch late '09 model and I have a problem burning dvds
with Toast 10 & Popcorn 3.

I get an interface error: 5
the connection is not stable.

Then the disc is not burn and I end up with a coaster.

I don't have this problem when I use my Macbook in 10.5.8 using these programs.

Is this an OS problem or a Roxio problem??

Can someone help me out??

Thanks

iMac (late '09), Macbook (late '08), Mac OS X (10.6.2)

I too encountered problem when trying to copy one disc through Toast.

I think the problem is copying a disc and then burning it through Toast directly. If I have data already on the mac Toast burns it without a problem. So I think making an image of the data and then burning it manually might be the way to go. I'll keep playing around and see what happens.

Just add me to the list. New 21.5"/4GB/Toast 9(latest version from the Roxio site). I get the interface error 5 too. If I save from Toast as a disk image and then burn that using Disk Utility it works(both for single and double layer disks) but I then get the occasional Sensor Error/Media Sense error. However, I'm using some cheap media and I think these are down to that, but I'm going to try TY disks just to be sure.

To me this indicates it's a Toast problem(but the evidence is not rock solid)

Has anyone got Apple to swap an optical drive based on this problem? There are enough people reporting it that I wonder if anyone has tried?

If you just want to make a video DVD then use iDVD which comes with every Mac. Edit the movie in iMovie or FCP and then bring it into iDVD. iDVD is nice but doesn't give the fine control you can get with DVDSP.

For other optical disk jobs(e.g. audio CDs, copying disks, making Windows compatible media etc. etc. Toast has always been the standard Mac application. You can do most(if not all) of the things it does using tools already present in OSX(sometimes via the command line) but Toast has always been the one stop shop for this sort of thing.

Which is why so many people are annoyed with these errors!!

I've run into this issue recently using OS X 10.6.2 and Toast 10.0.5. Using a burn folder in the Finder worked OK so it looks as if the drive itself is fine. I removed all traces of Toast from the /Library and ~/Library folders and re-installed v10.0.0. It has just burned a disk successfully.

I'll need to try it with the upgrade to 10.0.4 (which used to work) and then the latest to see where the problem starts appearing. I suspect that this issue occurred the first time I tried to burn with 10.0.5 but will need to verify it.
