27" iMac hard drive noise

I just picked up a 27" iMac with the 1 T HD. I can hear the hard drive any time the computer is "working". Took the first one back to the Apple store and exchanged it, thinking I had a defective machine. The replacement makes the same noise.
Anyone else having this issue? Are these things supposed to be this noisy?

Applecare just tell you that it should be virtually silent. Hard to gauge what their definition of 'virtually silent' is though.

No Bootcamp so that's not a culprit here. Never had any other iMac I've owned make any discernible noise at all.

No Bootcamp on this one either. Just a point-I have a Lacie d2 External
and it sits there all day long without a sound.

How about if you attempt to turn off Spotlight searches all together? Prevent it from cataloging any part of your hard drive.

I have given up on the iMac and am thinking of going to Windows 7.
The cost is about a 1000.00 less for an HP with a 23" LED screen.

I am holding out to see how the MBP's are.

We have now had two of the three 2 TB Hitachi drives (inside iMacs) come up with this noise issue. Most disturbing. Now in the process of having them replaced.

It may sound quite but when its at home in your room on your desk which all make acoustic differences it could be more noisy, also as mine will be a BTO its going to have to be a online buy anyway.

Just got my 4th replacement iMac 27" i7 and thankfully it has a WD drive in it!

The Imac boxes only describe the size of the hard drive, not the manufacturer. You need to turn it on and run System Profiler. If you have a noisy drive, return it.
