Can't transfer/import XDCAM files from harddrive into FCP

hi, i filmed all of my footage using an XDCAM and had to return the cams immediately. so i copied all the clips from the capture media to an external hard drive (everything within the BPAV folder) one to one. i also downloaded and installed the XDCAM EX Clip Browser on my MacBook Pro and can view the clips.

the problem i have is that i can't import the clips into FCP. the "Import> SONY XDCAM..." feature in FCP won't allow me to access these files. the BPAV folder remains greyed out.

what do i need to do to get the clips into FCP? is there a different plugin i need? the clip browser won't let me export the clips to any other format. i'm stumped. i run FCP computer on my G5 PPC Quad core. the file browser only runs on Intel macs. so i use my MBP to view the clips but that's all i can do.

can someone please help me out ?

many thx!

i looked at the XML generated when i copied the files to new directories from within XDCAM EX Clip browser. as stated doing so created new BPAV folders for each respective export with the xml's described.

taking a look at the xml structure, you get essentially this xml unit repeated for each subfolder containing the (yes intact) nested MP4 clips and their respective associated files. (i always had those):

<Material uri="./CLPR/566 0025_01/566_002501.SMI" type="PD-EDL" fps="50i" dur="1043" ch="2" aspectRatio="16:9" offset="0" umid="060A2B340101010501010D4313000000AA94CF66605105D808004602022A0236">
<Component uri="./CLPR/566 0025_01/566_002501.MP4" type="MP4" videoType="MPEG2HD35 1920_1080MP@HL" audioType="LPCM16" fps="50i" dur="1043" ch="2" aspectRatio="16:9" offset="0"/>
<RelevantInfo uri="./CLPR/566 0025_01/566_002501M01.XML" type="XML"/>
<RelevantInfo uri="./CLPR/566 0025_01/566_002501R01.BIM" type="BiM"/>
<RelevantInfo uri="./CLPR/566 0025_01/566_002501I01.PPN" type="PPN"/>
</Material>

so having done this (copied the files into new directories from within the clip browser) and seeing the correct xml structure seems to be in place i 'should' be now able to import the clips into FCP no?

so why is it now still not working?

also looked at the other XML and it seems to have nothing about the last folder as you stated, onlöy this single unit:

<cueupinfo xmlns="urn:schemas-professionalDisc:cueupinfo" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="urn:schemas-professionalDisc:cueupinfo cueupinfo.xsd">
<history/>
</cueupinfo>

OK, I have 3 clips that I have copied one after the other from 2 different cards.

My MEDIAPRO.XML that I edited manually refers to those 3 like below:

The duration that you see on each section where it is referred, comes from the XML file that is inside each folder where the MP4 file resides. There is a XML file which indicates the duration of each clip.

About my CUEUP.XML file here its content:
----------------
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<cueupinfo xmlns="urn:schemas-professionalDisc:cueupinfo"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="urn:schemas-professionalDisc:cueupinfo cueupinfo.xsd">
<history>
<clip uri="./CLPR/AA010573 01/AA01057301.SMI"
umid="060A2B340101010501010D431300000092F55AA0625105DF0800460202280F00"
ftc="smpte-25=00:00:00:00"/>
</history>
</cueupinfo>

Hope this might help you making a valid test to try out with few clips.
Regards,
Armando.

Another important data Frank to be recovered by the XML file inside each Clip's sub-folder is the "umid" data: you need to copy that and add to your MEDIAPRO.XML as well with the CUEUP.XML from those that you will get from the clip's related umid.

So as you can see is a lot of work to be done manually which is highly prone of errors.
But in this way you will be able to Log & Transfer your clips.
This is suggested as is, because I would never suggest you to do it for 257 times, honestly.
Again if you can find a way to have Clip browser working as expected, then I would waste that time to find how instead of doing so... but as a last resort.

Regards,
Armando.

hi armando thx.
the only thing different from your CUEUP.xml file and mine is the <history> tag which in mine seems to have nothing. this is strange because it was generated by the sony software from within the clip browser. i tried adding the <history> tag with the same info yours has (with my files UMID etc of course) and chaning a few values for the timecode etc but that made no difference.

the umid's are all there in the MEDIAPRO.xml - seems all correct as far as i can see respective to the files within the BPAV i created when copying the files just now via the clip browser.

seems like i've hit a wall

hey armando good news 🙂 i got it working!

so spare yourself the time helping me. you've been a great help already. looking at your XML i came to realize that somehow my first copy attempts generated a funky file. i just re-copied a bunch more files and tried them again. they all seem to be working.

many thx to Tom also 🙂
