Adding links to website

I'm learning how to construct and use iWeb and MobileMe to construct and use a website. It is easy to add pictures, music, movies, etc., but I have been unable to add links. how do you do that?

Highlight the text you want to turn into a link. Open the Inspector. Click on the next to last option along the top - with a little white arrow in a blue box icon. Click on "Enable as a hyperlink." There will be a clickbox to make the selected text either a URL - that points to either an external file, a URL somewhere, or to another page on your Web site.

If you click on the "Make Hyperlinks Active" box on the bottom of that Inspector page, when you click on the page's test while editing, you'll be thrown to your link - sometimes you might want that to occur while editing ... but probably not.

Thanks for the help. It looks like just what I need, and I'll be putting it to use when I get up. However, since I'm just a one-day "veteran" with iWeb and MobilMe, I'm going to be running into more stumbling blocks before I'm even semi-competent. Where is the best place to find instructions for their use? I hope there's something better than HELP, which I seldom find to be very helpful.

Thanks. By the way, I finally settled upon iWeb and MobileMe, and once I got past the rough patches (for me, there were some--too many), it was much easier than I had expected. I tried the method that Clintbradford suggested for adding links to the website, but it didn't work. The Link window seemed to be dead, and nothing on it responded to clicks. Fortunately, the HELP feature, which I had maligned, reminded me that with Macs, you only have to drag the link to the desktop to activate it, so that's what I did. After I mastered that, the bulk of my web building problems were behind me, except that there are always more layers of sophistication to learn. Now I want to to add the feature that changes the pictures automatically. I can't think of the name: cascading? scrolling? but I'm sure you know what i mean. I think it would be a real eye-catcher in my website. Anyway, I'm very grateful for the sources you have given me. I will certainly be making the most of them.

clintbradford is right about creating links. It's a basic feature of iWeb. I have a couple to demo pages showing different ways to use links:

LinkTestPage

Misc. Items

Text Based Navbar

As for a slideshow flash is probably the most used method. These demo pages have several different types:

SimpleViewer and Flash Album Exporter

Flash Album Exporter Postcard and AutoViewer Slideshow Themes

Jalbum. This method, free, has over 100 different themes/skins to choose from.

Another possibility would be to create a slideshow in iPhoto and export as a QT movie. Add that movie, set it to autoplay and loop in the Inspector/Quicktime pane and position on the page. Export the slideshow out of iPhoto using one of the slideshow options in this window:

User uploaded file

The mobile or medium would be a size and this method will reduce the file size so it loads quicker.

Which might mean that there wasn't anything highlighted on the page you're editing.

I wasn't trying to say that your advice was wrong. I was merely saying that my Link window, for whatever reasons, wasn't
activated and wasn't working. However, I'll go back to see if there's any way I can overcome that. However, the drag and drop method did work pretty well.
What I suggested isn't a "trick" or anything - it's purely legitimate iWeb stuff. I know it works - I have a page full o' links on my iWeb site!

As I have said, I was in no way criticizing you. I was merely stating what I found. I mean, there are so many ways that things can go wrong, and I'm usually not the one who is capable of determining which one it was.

"Slideshow," yes, that's the word I was trying to think of. I'm going to bed now, but I'll be putting your advice to good use tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Regarding what clintbradford mentioned. If you don't select any text on the page the link pane will not activate. So be sure you have selected the text that you want to become a link before going to the Inspector/Link/Link pane to assign the URL to the text.

I am in the process of "fine-tuning" my first website, and everything is going fine. However, I encountered two problems today: (1) the link to a song from my iTunes library no longer works. A friend who reviewed my website could not open that link either. (2) I added a link to a working website by dragging and dropping, but that link doesn't work, either.

I might add that the music link has worked every time I tried it UNTIL TODAY. Do you have any ideas as to what might be causing these problems?

What's the URL of the page that has the audio file on it? Have you added anything to the page previous to today?

(1)<sellingmymobilehome.com>
(2) Well, I added the song yesterday, or the day before yesterday.

I added the bottom link, not the song link, today.

I went to an Apple Store the other day, and they gave me a lot of useful information about iWeb and MobileMe. So, when I didn't get an answer to my last posting to this forum, I decided to scrap my first attempt at website building and try again. Today I went to my website AND IT"S NOW WORKING. The song link now works, as does the video link. The link at the bottom entitled, "Demographics" still is not active, but I probably made a mistake of some kind when I tried to set it up, so I'm going to try again.

Is this sort of thing to be expected with websites? Do they sometimes work and sometime not? If so, is this a rare happening, or is it one of those things you just have to accept?

Now it's NOT working. Two minutes is the difference. I made no changes of any kind, but when I went back to my website two minutes after sending the above message, it wasn't working. What could be causing this? It's embarrasing.
