Adding links to website

I'm learning how to construct and use iWeb and MobileMe to construct and use a website. It is easy to add pictures, music, movies, etc., but I have been unable to add links. how do you do that?

If it worked once then the site is OK. It has to be MMe having problems. What is the URL so I can check it out also.

Something's wrong here, too. Someone asked me for my URL a few days ago so that they could check it, and I gave it to them. I've been wondering why I didn't get a reply. Anyway, here it is again: <sellingmymobilehome.com> I checked it just now (2:14 PM PST) and everything worked except for two new minor problems: the last two links only partially worked (You'll see what I mean). However, the Google map, the song, the picture, the video, and all the links, except the last two, worked.

The Sebastopol link doesn't work as it's been cut off I believe. Shouldn't it be http://www.city-data.com/city/Sebastopol-California.html instead of http://www.city-data.com/city/Sebastopol- ?

The weather forecast has a couple of spaces in it so only the last part of it works. It should be:

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=95472&wuSelect =WEATHER

Instead of having that long ugly link you could enter the following text: Weather Forcast for Sebaqstopol and link it to the site using the Inspector/Hyperlink/Link pane.

It would look like this: Weather Forcast for Sebastopol, California

The same for the Demographics link. Add the following text, Sebastopol Demographics and link it to the site. Would look a little cleaner.

It appears that you're needing a quick course in OSHA Ladder Safety. 🙂 4 years ago my next door neighbor was on a ladder like that inside her house when the bottom slid away on a tile floor. She went down and pulverized both legs and ended her Army (full colonel) and airlines hostess (second most senior hostess for United) careers. Just one bad decision changed her whole life. She's undergoing more surgery next week. So prepare very carefully for what you're about to undertake. We can't afford to lose a budding iWeb/MobileMe user.

NIKU: Any comments on the ON Again Off Again aspect of this website? Also, as to ladder safety, you seem to have overlooked the fact that the ladder is prevented from sliding out by SANDBAGS. Also, notice that the ladder can't slide to the left because of the house, and it cannot slide to the right because of the TWO lines I have fastened to the ladder. Finally, I searched the Internet and Youtube (Including OSHA sites) at great length and to my great surprise and indignation THERE WAS NOT ONE SITE THAT HAD ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT THE SAFE WAY TO MOUNT THE LADDER FROM THE ROOF. Since this was my only real concern, I felt that OSHA and everyone else had failed me and everyone who wants to know the "proper" way to mount the ladder from the roof. That is by far the most dangerous part of using a ladder.

I did see your precautions and wan't pointing out any deficiencies. Just a little humor and serious reminiscing about what could happen. When I worked for the DOE we had many, many, many safety meetings and the only criteria for the ladder that I remember was the angle which you mentioned in the video. I'm sure they mentioned something about securing the base or having good "feet" on the base if on concrete or other smooth surfaces. If it were me going up I'd get a large hollywood stunt airbag to put below. 🙂

As far as the audio file it's not uncommon for some files not to be loaded one time and then load the next on MMe. MMe often hiccups that way.

Okay, I won't worry about it, then. It's just that you want your website to work--PERFECTLY--when you invite friends to look at it. As to the ladder, the reason I spent so much time looking for safety tips wasn't because I was not comfortable using it, it's because I was SCARED. The only thing that got me up and down that thing is that my girlfriend had scampered up and down it many times without a second thought...and without sandbags or ropes. I wonder if it makes a difference that she weighed about 140 while I weighed 240 at the time I made the video. Oh, well, anyway, thanks for the help.

There is a way to add the audio to the site and it doesn't have to be uploaded every time the site is published. That's using a flash audio player like the one on this demo page: Audio Players. It's uploaded to the server once an that's it.

Hmmm, maybe that's a reason why I was having some difficulties with the song I added to my website. I didn't use the method you have mentioned, I just moved the song from my iTunes library by dragging it. This then provided a frame into which I put a picture. I'll try your method next time I want to add a song to a website of mine, but there won't be one in this particular website when it's finished. I've just been trying to see what could be done. By the way, since computer stuff is so easily forgotten if you don't use it, I have ordered a book on iLife from Amazon. You guys have helped enormously, but I need something more permanent that's there instantly whenever I need it.

The method you used is the "standard" method for iWeb. But it requires that the file get uploaded again if the page is edited and republished.

Create a test page to work out the kinks in applying the flash player then add it to the next page you need to. Good luck.

Niku: I'm back with my website. I managed to fix my Flip camcorder, and now I'm just waiting for some good weather to make the video I'll be adding to it. I just have two questions:

(1) I didn't understand your instructions for getting rid of the long and ugly links. The process seems simple, but I just don't understand what I'm supposed to do.
(2) How do I add my Flip video to my website? I obviously did it once, but I can't remember how I did it.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Type in the text you would like to be the link: something like "Weather Forcast for Sebastopol, California". Then select that text and go to the Inspector/Link/Hyperlink pane. Select "an external page" from the menu and put the full URL, http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=95472&wuSelect =WEATHER, in the URL field.

The the link will look like the link in my previous post. You can use any text you want.

As for the video, you probably dragged the video file onto the page in iWeb and positioned it where you wanted it to go.
