Update Problem and iPhone 3GS MEMORY ISSUE

I have a iPhone 3GS 8GB, I don't know how its 8GB, it has all the same function that a 3GS should. I'm on version 3.0.1 on my iPhone and I tried updating to 3.1.2 by clicking the update button, NOT restore. After extracting software, it goes verifying, then it says, iphone is not eligible for the requested build. I"m on itunes 9. Anyone know what the problem is? My iphone has 6.77GB but it says 16GB on the back.

You can take it to an corporate AT&T location and ask them. Their data plan is not just for iPhones.

I the update to 3.1.2 worked but after it got installed an error popup and now the iphone screen is stuck on DFU mode.
