SD card in the cd slot

I am so glad this site is here because I had teh same problem and took it in to the store I purchased it from and they couldnt help me they wanted to send it out to be repaired, like 300 dollars. I didnt have it done yet and ran across this site, and i tried several times with the paper clip and it didnt work until i turned my computer on its side and done it, and low and behold there it came out. So grateful for everyones tip. Thanks guys you saved me a lot of money

Hi, I just wanted to tell you that I did the trick. I got the SD stuck while viewing a tennis match and paying no attention. I was worried until I found this trick. It did not work with the paper clip, but I got the thin wire from behind a paint and after the third try I saw it coming. I finalized with the paper clip though since the wire was not strong enough to get it out. So, thanks. 🙂

Wanted to thank you for your advice. I made the same stupid mistake and with the L shape business card got the SD card out of the CD slot. I thought I was the only one out there that could make such mistake. I see not! Thanks again.

Thank you for your advice. It really worked! I actually suggest to lift the computer with the drive side down and use the L-shaped cardboard to guide the sd card.

my son does this to my computer all the time!! i turn my desktop computer on its side and use a regular dinner knife (saw the tec at store use this one time) very gently put the knife in and try and dislodge it from wherever it is and slide to the front until it appears... this works for me!

i tried paper clips in the past and they scratched up the inside of the drive.

Yep nice one! worked, almost first time.... No problem took less than a minute.

Just did it. tired. slipped the sd card into the wrong slot without looking.

turned off machine.

unplugged it.

tilted the machine on its side.

laid it very gently on one corner (lower right)

tapped it three times.

took a letter opener.

slipped it into the top of the cd slot.

pushed it very gently all the way to the back.

slid it downward all the way

then pulled backed toward me.

it popped right out.

OMG....i went in with a wire hanger rather than paper clip...heard a cracking sound, didnt get it out....now im worried i did even more damage.

We too suffered same issue. See post from cathy1956. we tried using same material. Somehow idea of inserting a hard wire into a sensitive area seemed extreme. We had good success with cardboard from ceral box. We could not figure out the description she provided so we made our own. We made a T shaped structure from a box with the side seam of the box running up the middle of vertical portion of the T. This formed a very nice fold for us. Height of T was 4 inches and was 4 inches accross the top. When then folded this formed a very nice L shaped scructure. Height was 4 inches with a 2 inch leg. The width of the cardboard was 3/4 inches along both legs. We tipped the imac on its side and after a few brisk taps heard the SD card fall. Then inserting the cardboard tool and releasing the fold it expanded to allow the SD card to be caprtured and moved toward the opening. imac was placed face down on the table. From looking at contents of disassembled imacs on youtube it appears that the mechanism of the CD drive faces the rear of the unit, meaning the front is basicly flat and should theoreticly allow for a smooth surface to slide the SD card along. SD card popped out as we extracted the cardboard L. The fold idea was genious and acted as a capture mechanism for the too. Thanks to Cathy1956 for that inspiration. I agree this would seem to be asthectly a good design but clearly an ergonomic problem that future designs should correct. While the iMac is good it is not perfect.

I used a business card, first picking up the iMac to turn it on its side. I heard the SD card drop back to the opening then I simply put the business card in about half way, slid it down until it stopped on what had to be the card. Gentle pressure and pulling the card towards me, rewarded me with the SD card after a dozen tries. Felt the business card was a better option than a paper clip, there it a laser lense and exposed electronics, mechanics etc inside. Not a great environment for a paper clip. Goes without saying, power off.

Dropped my SD card in the CD slot, had a heart attack, instantly went on Apple Support Forums, used paper clip, GOT IT OUT.

Like so many others, I can only say THANK YOU! SD card went into wrong slot and came out of slot thanks to the great advice!

Thanks so much for your help.....it makes me not feel so stupid when i read about everybody doing this, we turned it on its side and my husband got it out with the paperclip!!!!! saved us lots of money!!!! and its friday the 13th!!! my lucky day!!!!

Thanks so much for your simple and effective solution! In the process of trying to capture the card it eventually pushed right in to the drive. I made a tool as you described and quite easily managed to pull it back out. Saved me time offline and considerable expense.
