OS9 apps won't work in Classic

My old G3 Powerbook HD died again. Got a G4 Mini 1.5G w/ OS10.4.11 (all new updates as of 11/15/09) so I could still use old design files from apps like VectorWorks 8.5.2 and Illustrator 7.0.1 that I really need from my business archives. Classic is installed and says its running OS9.2.2 like it should, and previously installed OS9 apps like Outlook Express 5.0 work OK.
What do I need to do to get the apps from my backup drive to work on the "new" system?

RE: using a USB flash drive for alternate OS9 system location...
I don't really see why another OS9.2.2 location will help, unless you suspect the integrity of the one already there and able to run previously installed OS9 apps. Tried it anyway--it sees my CD OS9 but warns me it is not writable. It does not see that same OS9 copied onto my (world's smallest and slowest) USB flash drive.

As for copying CD System Folders,
a) that is all I have for alternate OS9 Systems; besides the OS9.1 Retail I have Technitool with 9.2.2, 9.1 and lower System Folders.
b) I've read in other forums the version and source of the OS9 needed by Classic is not too particular, and people have copied over systems low as 9.0.x successfully.
c) I don't have much to lose at this point, and am getting desperate

RE: Does the external drive require OS9 Drivers to be installed? - shouldn't.
I used their Silverlining software during setup of the drive, and probably installed OS9 drivers then, but any drivers were installed on the internal drive so the system could work the external drive. See the Silverlining readme notes below.

"Silverlining Pro is an application that provides essential Macintosh drive management functions in a convenient control panel. Use Silverlining Pro to test, format and partition drives, mount, unmount and password protect volumes, and manage removable media. It can also be used to create high performance RAID volumes.
Silverlining Pro is compatible with all Macintosh models, Mac OS 9.0.4 through 9.2.2. Note: If you are running Macintosh OS X exclusively you will not need Silverlining Pro. The LaCie drive is completely Mac OS X compatible and the operation system provides full support for this device.
9) In the Options section, click the Install Mac OS 9 Disk Drivers box if you plan on sharing the drive between the Mac OS 9.x and Mac OS 10.x."

That got me thinking more about this drive being incompatible . . . so I dragged over the LaCie (OS9) Firewire Support extension into the (OS9) System Folder>Extensions folder. I know that is a rude way to manage extensions, but what else to do when the installer is written for OS9 only?

Now it says "File Error; Couldn't open the file". File Info tells me the system thinks its a PDF. I can change Open With... to Tiger Photoshop and get the OS9 Illustrator file converted, but no "imported" OS9 apps from the external drive are running. Not really progress, I could open old "imported" files on Tiger apps with suitable conversion, like Excel file to OpenOffice.

Different, tho. Maybe time to Reset Launch Preferences again? Or get drunk--this has postponed my new year celebration.

Hey Michael,
I was involved with KS and skipped over your zip suggestion. I had Stuffit 5.5 on the old external drive and there is Stuffit 6.0 (Classic) on the new system. Of course the old app won't work. I tried the new one and got Error -43 telling me its missing Stuffit Engine.

What do you use to zip with Tiger these days? I don't know if that would ultimately get around any file incompatibility we are grasping at solving, but would be good to know anyway.

I've harbored (harboured for you) this theory that the moment Classic saw my external hard drive, it brought over all the OS9 apps it could handle into the folder "Applications (Mac OS 9)", didn't bother to mention it, and that is all there is and ever will be. It was somewhat odd that the previous owner had all the same OS9 apps of:
Acrobat Reader 5.0
MS IE 5.0
Netscape Comm
Outlook Express 5.0.2
and others installed. Until I see they have Stuffit 6.0 vs. my old 5.5, they have Netscape 4.7 vs. my old v7. With that, and your earlier experience with PhotoDeluxe working under Classic, maybe I can let that conspiracy theory go. That leaves me with Classic ought to work for most or all of these and why is it not?

Hey, maybe we should be drinking Buddies!?

After many hours & more 10.4/Classic combination boots than a Sane Person would have... I've have partial success!

PS6 no longer launches in Classic but opens Script Editor though it now says open with Terminal.app/2.1.3!?

Apparently nobody ever found a cure for this in the years since discovering it!?

Illustrator 8.0.1 in the same folder still runs. others that did don't.

I like tough problems, so buy me a Beer & hang on for a decade or so & I figure the meager leads I have will lead to an answer. User uploaded file

Thanx for your valiant efforts, people. I am calling this a drive/directory problem. OS X is apparently not really happy to read my OS 9 drive. Even though files can come over, the .DAT file and .FRK folder in every folder tells me there are anomalies between the directory structures. Something like their creator code / app resources are not where OS X expects them.

I will have to revive my OS9 machine and do a network transfer-- of the apps, at least. That way each OS is handling the data its own way through a neutral 3rd part of TCP/IP.

Drinks on the house! (Steve buys, right?)
