AKS1,

Let's capture a minidump of the crash and send it to the Apple engineers to analyze. You know, make them work off those round little eggnog bellies.

To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.

And then send it to the apple moderator. Tell her Toonz sent you. It doesn't hurt to put the URL to this discussion thread, so that whoever gets it has some context. You also need to tell them exact what you are doing with iTunes when you blue screen. Are you updating the iPod? Are you burning a CD?

okay, if there isn't an Easy CD Creator in there

Hi B,

Thanks for the support. Last night, i found a Roxio file folder on my computer. I think they are the same thing as Easy CD creator, correct? Either way, i pulled it off my computer. Meanwhile, I have been backing up my music files onto CD-R disks for safety sake. As soon as I am done (should be later tonight), I will try everything again and let you know. However, i am still very interested in what your reinforcements say.

Thanks again!

AKS1,

I replied to you, but you apparently didn't see it.

Toonz,

How long does it usually take for Apple moderators to get back to you after sending in your minidump info (as you recommended)? I sent it in about 5 days ago and have heard nothing. To bring you (and the helpful B Noir) up to date, i have not been able to start iTunes on my computer at all. It shuts down upon startup and now upon a fresh install. Also, everytime i plug my ipod (3g 20gb) into the cradle, it crashes now. The error is an x50 with the text: "page fault in non fault area."

Thanks,
AKS

I am having this same exact problem. I updated my iPod and iTunes recently (December sometime) and about a week ago, my iPod started just skipping songs by itself. It freezes and reacts slowly, if at all. I had the guys at the Apple store kinda look at it today and they just "rebooted" it and said it would be fine. I tried updating some songs tonight and once I connect my iPod, my iTunes stops responding. I never had a problem until I updated with iTunes ver 6.0. I need help. I am going to try the suggestion on the link, I just hope it will work. Any other suggestions??

You should have gotten a reply on Jan 5th. Ok, here's what the reply would have said, if you'd received it.

Alex is crashing in a driver called disk.sys which is a normal part of the Windows OS provided by Microsoft, but some manufacturers overwrite / replace this component. I know Samsung has a version that they replace this with as well. So, I'm interested in knowing who's disk.sys he has.
Ask Alex to search for a file called disk.sys on his system. It's probably in the folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers. Then when he finds it, select it, right click and select "Properties". Go to the Version tab and see what company claims to have provided it, see what version number is on the file.
Also ask him what the model / manufacturer of his computer is. (If he doesn't know, he can run the CD diagnostics in the iTunes Help menu and the second line in the diagnostics output is the computer model information.) I think he needs to go to his manufacturer's support site and make sure he has all the latest drivers and updates for his machine.

OK. I have solved my problem with connecting the iPod & crashing the computer. This might not be the same solution for others, but it was what was wrong with my system.

My computers Power Supply was going bad & finally failed this weekend. I replaced it & everything is working fine now.

Computer doesn't crash when I plug anything into the USB ports, etc.

Now the only problem that I have is iTunes loses the link to my music files, but that's a different topic. 🙂

Good luck & thanks to all who replied.

well done Novy!

good lord ... many thanks for the report. never seen a power supply cause that set of symptoms before (although we recently got a report of a failing CMOS battery causing a "USB not recognised" message).

on some occasions we've had cases of PCs just shutting down (no blue screens, no error messages in Device Manager) when doing a CD import when the power supply was going bad. i guess the mechanism might be the same in both types of cases ... there's enough of a spike in power usage during an import (or at the beginning of a sync) for the power supply problems to start causing the PC grief (even though it's working fine under other circumstances).

love, b
