are you getting a blue screen? if so, what text and numerical codes are you getting? here's a reference to some of the common ones:

http://kadaitcha.cx/stop_err.html

if you're not getting a blue screen, use this technique to show up any hidden ones:

1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

keep us posted.

I've been experiencing the same problem. I've updated to iTunes 6 & ever since then it crashes every time & plug in the iPod.

I have un-installed iTunes & re-installed iTunes 4 & it works fine, BUT I can't download my purchased music since it was done in iTunes 6.

I'm looking for a solution if anyone has one. It's very frustrating.

Hi b,

I've noticed that you've asked that question a lot.

I did go & turn off the Automatic Restart like I've read in these discussions to try & get a blue screen error message. Unfortunately, I don't get a blue screen or error message at all. Is there a log that I can check?

I got it to mount last night, show up in iTunes 6. Gave me a message saying that my iPod didn't match my computer (I've never used anyone else's on my computer. Mines been the only one used on it.) did I want to update the iPod with my Library. I clicked OK & crashola.

Computer goes into a re-boot. Not right away either it sometimes keeps trying & then finally goes.

The only error messages that I get is the one that asks you if you want to start up in safe mode or start up normally because the system unexpectedly shut down because of a power/software/hardware issue. It also sometimes says that it needs to check one of my HD for consistency (that screen is blue) & it goes into check disk which always comes out fine.

My iPod is a 40GB 4G HP version. I've contacted HP for their support, but unfortunately I'm out of warranty for the past 2-1/2 months. So I shoot off an e-mail to HP e-mail support. The reply was that the software isn't downloading correctly & corrupt that it's a computer problem & I should contact my computer manufacturer.

I've searched MS Windows Update to see if there was some patch that was issued to make it compatible with iTunes 6, but I couldn't find anything.

I've also contacted Apple iTunes Music Store to get my music that they charged me for to be able to make it available in a earlier version of iTunes so I can listen to it. My iPod works when being used with an older version of iTunes.

I'd be curious to know how many people this has affected and to what cost. If it doesn't get resolved soon, I wouldn't be surprised if there was another class action law suit coming.

Be glad when this is over.

I just got a new toshiba laptop and after I downloaded the itunes software, I tried connecting my ipod to my new laptop and everytime I connect the ipod to my computer, my computer freezes. I have to keep restarting my computer. On the ipod it continues to say do not disconnect like it is updating the ipod but the computer is frozen. I connect the ipod to the old toshiba laptop and it works just fine. What could it be? I do not see no message or no folder, the computer just freezes. I'm connecting the ipod using a firewire cardbus. I used this cardbus with the old laptop and the new laptop. It works with the old laptop but the ipod does not work with the new laptop. I also checked under device manager and the cardbus is working. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software and I have the same problem.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well seems the lot of us is in the same boat.

I did try everything suggested in the support pages of the website, however, I cannot restore my iPod. The iPod Updater freezes when the iPod connects. I tried all my USB ports, I tried to reset the iPod, I turned it to Disk Mode, etc., but nothing will do. It seems it happened after I updated iTunes to the 6.0.1.3 version, but I doubt it did anything. I restarted my computer time and times again and i'm clueless as to what i could now do to solve this.

I had the same problem with my wife's iPod and managed to fix it but it takes some doing. I had a friend of mine try it with his and it also worked for him. I've posted the fix in the other discussion area. You can find it at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=288180&tstart=0

Can't guarantee that it will work but it's worked twice so far. Took me 3 days to work through it but only took my friend about 45 minutes from start to finish to get it back up and running.

Curiousity question for any of you. How long had your iPod been working and how often did you move songs to and from it? Also, did you have any other symptons like occasionally skipping or not playing a song before this happened? I'm working on an idea to prevent all of those and would appreciate your input.

The solution sounds like it might fix the folder! icon, but I can't even plug my iPod into my computer without it crashing. I've never had the folder! problem yet.

I have tried the original CD & re-installed iTunes 4 after un-installing iTunes 6, BUT I've got some songs that were downloaded through 6 that I can't use on 4. The iPod was able to be hooked up to the computer though without crashing it.

I've noticed that you've asked that question a lot.

🙂 that's not surprising, Novy. blue screens are one of my "advice fields." (by no means the most common problem i work on, though. you can check whether or not i'm telling the truth about that by simply clicking on my alias and looking through a random sample of about 100 of the different threads you find me involved in. truth is important.)

i ask about the numerical and text codes of BSODs because there are literally dozens of different blue screen messages that you can get on a Windows PC. see:

Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages

... and by cross-referencing the error codes with other information (like the circumstances of the BSOD, event log records on the PC in question, and any information showing up in the Device Manager on the PC), we can get a heads-up on a possible cause.

for example (not suggesting that this is your problem, it's just an example of the cross-referencing in action), one of the first thing i check for if people are reporting an 0x00000050 PAGE FAULT_IN_NONPAGEDAREA when they either launch itunes, import a CD in itunes, or (of all things) plug in an ipod, is this particular problem:

Easy CD Creator 5.0 Does Not Function In Windows XP

because truth is important, here's a search on the 0x00000050 code delimited by my alias:

b noir: 0x00000050

back to your startup blue screen:

The only error messages that I get is the one that asks you if you want to start up in safe mode or start up normally because the system unexpectedly shut down because of a power/software/hardware issue.

could you give us the precise text of that error message? (a search of the KB docs at MS on segments of the precise text can often pull up some information on an error message like that.)

love, b
