Mine also went into recovery/safe mode after its update and I am not sure how to really fix this without going in and restoring it and losing everything I have in it.
I created a smart playlist for a two part audiobook. Suddenly the playlist is empty??? And it won't sync. I had to set my sync to manual and copy the playlist to my iPhone. This is VERY annoying.
Since "upgrading" to 3.1.3 I've had syncing error messages and my 2nd gen iPod touch says it has no music files yet itunes show the space being used by "other" I am going to restore. Can anyone tell me how to downgrade back to 3.1.2.?
Since my upgrade several days ago and a lack of functionality I used to count on, I've called AppleCare twice and visited the Genius Bar once. There's apparently no way to downgrade to 3.1.2, unless you've jailbroken your Touch. 😟
I was finally able get iTunes to update my iPod Touch without having to do it on another computer. Never had a problem with my iPod Touch until this update. I use a recent model iMac with the most recent version of iTunes. The update failed and it ended up in recovery mode. Each time I tried to restore it would always failed and was perpetually stuck in recovery mode. This may help anyone unable to get the update to work. Go to your user account/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates. Either delete or move the file "iPod2,1
3.1.3_7E18Restore.ipsw". This is the update file and each time you try to restore, iTunes keeps using this same defective file (obviously a bad download). By removing this file it forces iTunes to re-download the file. In my case the newly downloaded update file worked and the update was successful.
For those using Windows I'm sure it would be similar. The update file has to be somewhere on your hard drive.
Unfortunately this does not fix the smart playlist bug which is the only one I have except for the Podcast scrolling issue.
Ya behind the scene's is right, prevents any Iphone/Itouch from ever being jailbroken, and will brick it if it has ever been. If you ever want to jailbreak your device in the future you will not be able to so don't update if you even have the slightest curiosity in the matter.
I have found that since the 3.1.3 update, my iPhone is much slower, drops calls like crazy, and likes to lock up. I have several friends who are experincing the same thing with their phones since installing the update. Apple really needs to do something about this.
Unless you have erased all the content on your iPod,and HAVE to update and restore,I'd be wary of it. It updated as it was suppose to with no problems, and I was actually able to fit more stuff on my iPod,but the suprise was when I tried to go to iTunes and it said no connection, and I went to settings, and the Wi-Fi was grey, and showed n/a, as well as my bluetooth. Have yet to have anyother issues like are being posted, but I've been busy trying to fix that problem, and find answers for it to have the time to check if the apps work longer than a minute,or the songs play all the way through. Good Luck....but just say no...your better off.
I updated my ipod touch 3g to 3.1.3 and it drove me crazy. Most of my smart play lists didn't work so I downgraded it to 3.1.2, and I'm happy again. I'm not sure if I should trust apple with their updates...
