I see there are others in the same situation as me. Trying to update to OS 3.1.3 laid the phone dead.
My local apple Retail store could not help to identify the problem, other than saying it was hardware damage. It was denied this was a known fault with the phone. The conclusion was that it had to be sent in for total rebuild and the phone I may get in return must be considered as new. Cost responsibility was not confirmed, this was depending of what was considered the cause during 'repair'.

And the only thing I did was confirming a request to update the phone from the official itunes page. The phone has been working faultless and kept in mint condition until Apple themselves killed it. Strange and unpleasant situation.

3.1.3 bricked my 3G; Restore did nothing on primary MacBook. Switched to another MacBook and initial Restore failed; tried a last resort Restore.. and Sync started up - life. Totally erased all Apps, pics, Albums, Contacts, etc, etc. Once alive, went back and struggled with primary MacBook to get back to normal; succeeding slowly. Still missing Bluetooth for Jawbone ICON.. 😟 This was not a User friendly update.

thought I had bricked my ipod too
i updated today before seeing this information. iPod touch 1gen would not restart, it was not being recognized by computer or itunes. Found this info on apple site.

it at least got something on the ipod screen & itunes then saw it.
had to restore the device, came back on with factory settings, but seems to have my ipod settings still so I clicked sync & am still waiting, so far so good, It is about an 1/8 way thru, will probably take all night to put it all back on. Hope it does not crash while i'm sleeping.

I have had a 3g iphone for 12 months and have been impressed with the general feature/functions it offers however I'm not impressed with the software releases. I have upgraded to 3.1.3 and the wifi has stopped working completely! (cant scan for wireless networks) I use wifi for 99% of my phone use and it is completely frustrating that this has occurred because Apple cant release a software version without stuffing up something as fundamental as a network connection process - whoever is responsible for the networking component should be sacked!

Secondly, apple once again has proven that it has a company culture that is more interested in marketing and sales than delivery and support. The first thing Apple should do in a TIMELY manner is publish SOMEWHERE that this is a major problem with the release and that a fix is either available (and state what it is) or when it will be available and what the fix will be (assumably another release).

I have of course tried all the usual things (reboot the phone, re-network, reset all, etc, etc).

There are other issues I am experiencing with release 3.1.3 but I will report on those later - at the moment I need to resolve the network problem and want to see a response from Apple.

I also hda the problem when I upgraded to 3.1.3 my laptop no longer recognised my iPhone and was stuck in the restore mode.

I solved it by connecting it to my desktop PC and it was recognised and installed the new firmware as a new phone.

I then connected back to my laptop and restored the backup but it only restored my contacts, messages, photos and settings. All purchased apps and music were gone so having to sync everything again.

This is the first problem I've had with an upgrade though and I dont seem to be having any problems with the 3.1.3 firmware
