Having update issue

I'm stuck in some horrible screen telling me to connect my iphone to itunes after i attempted to update to the new software. I've turned off my antivirus/rebooted/tried a different usb cable and port all for nothing. I will try and uninstall itunes and reinstall it because that is another thing that was suggested but I'm wondering will I lose my sync data when I uninstall?

Uninstalling iTunes won't delete your iTunes app and media library or existing iPhone backups - so go ahead.

After reinstalling from a freshly downloaded copy, you may still have to use recovery mode:

1. Start iTunes.
2. Connect phone to a USB port on the computer, not an external hub or keyboard port.
3. Press both the home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears, then continue pressing the home button alone until iTunes sees the phone in recovery mode.
4. Follow the prompts to restore.

Hi, I have the same issue, I'm running Windows XP SP3. I've been successfully syncing my iphone to itunes for months, I've even successfully updated iTunes and iPhone OS versions in the past, however in the last few days iTunes said new iTunes and iPhone OS versions were available.

I plugged the iphone in and was prompted to update to the 3.1.3 OS which I agreed to (at this point iTunes hadn't updated to latest, it was still previous version - perhaps this is important?). Then during the 3.1.3 install process I got a 1602 error message and the iphone was showing the connect to itunes image - remember, I've been updating and syncing no problem for months, I haven't changed hardware or ports.

I then unplugged and connected again and itunes wouldn't recognise the iphone attached, and the iPhone is now stuck in recovery mode.

I have tried the following:
- disable antivirus (haven't disabled firewall as I have a router, again it's worked fine til today)
- removed all other USB devices on computer
- try different USB ports
- uninstalled iTunes, bonjour, apple mobile support, apple software update, quicktime and apple application support
- installed latest itunes 9.0.3.15
- reset iphone (hold buttons 10 secs)

None of these worked. Each time the following happens:

I plug the iphone into my computer Windows shows the following in the Windows Explorer task tray:
"Found new hardward - Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)"
and then the "Found New Hardware Wizard" pops up. In Windows Device Manager under "Other Devices" I see two entries for "Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)".

This is a fairly common problem (as some unanswered questions in Apple forum suggest) and I tried as suggested to update the driver in Windows device manager by pointing the hardward wizard at "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers", however this results in hardware wizard reporting "Cannot Install this Hardward - The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software."

Help!

Ok, called Apple Care (redirected from calling my local Apple Store) and the guy said to do the reset just as someone else indicated above, i.e.:
# run iTunes
# power off iPhone
# connect USB to iPhone and computer
# immediately press and hold both on/off button and Home button
# wait until apple logo appears on iPhone
# then let go of on/off button, keep holding Home button

Windows detects the Apple device then immediately recognises a different Apple (iBoot?) device instead and iTunes wakes up and prompts you to restore to factory settings. I did this (it downloaded 3.1.3 software) and I now have an iPhone reset to how I bought it, except it is now 3.1.3.

NOTE
However, I did all this on a different Windows XP SP3 computer (at work) which I had just installed iTunes 9.0.3.15 on. I haven't yet connected the phone to my home computer that has all my iTunes content and backups.

I presume when I get home I just need to sync? Or should I restore a backup?

You might have noticed this recovery mode method was already posted in this thread hours ago.

On my home PC the steps you described did not work, hence calling Apple Care. The key thing is that it works on a different PC.

However, having taken the iPhone back home, I plugged in the iPhone, tried to Restore and the exact same problem occured. 1602 followed by device manager not being able to find the driver.

I tried the same button pressing as you and the Apple Care guy described, and it refuses to be recognised in iTunes.

I deduce that the drivers are somehow wrong on my home PC, even though its worked fine for 6 months with prior updates.

Ok, there's another recovery mode called "DFU", which is a similar process to above, but forces the iPhone to show itself to the computer over USB as a different device (something like Apple DFU). Anyway, you do this by:
# Turn off iphone
# run itunes
# plug in iphone, and hold on/off + home for 10 seconds
# let go of on/off and hold home for further 10 seconds
iTunes then recognises the device and you can Restore again in iTunes.

However, this does not help me, as when I initiate restore, half way through the restore process the iPhone restarts and appears in Windows as "Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode" and Windows device manager again says it can't find the driver.

A few minutes later iTunes gives up with error 1601

So I still have a bricked iPhone (not jailbroken or unlocked).

Further update after calling Apple Care again. It's clear it's a driver issue on my home computer, it simply can't handle the iphone when it's in recovery mode.

The Apple Care person said error 1601 is not on their system.

I'm trying another complete uninstall of iTunes, and if that doesn't work the next step is to validate my driver files apparently.

Tried the phone again in it's recovery mode on another computer with iTunes and the PC immediately detects the phone in the correct recovery mode, prompts to restore, and succeeds.

So I do have a working phone again, but none of the content from my home PC.

I have exactly the same problem as you and been "lost" till now. Only different i cant even sync it for once. Tried all ways as advised but to no avail.... Sent the pc to repair man and he think is the "Hard-Disk" problem. Suggested a re-format on the hard disk and try again. Another issue pop up! My hard drive recovery file is corrupted, got to change to a new one and re-install the os and everything in..... lost and stuck....:(
