Aperture 3 and Scroll Wheel Mouse

Ok so I just downloaded the trial and imported a folder of pictures to start playing around with. The first thing I noticed is that using the scroll wheel on my mouse no longer lets me move through the pictures. In Aperture 2, if I hovered my cursor over the viewer, moving the scroll wheel down would take me to the next picture, moving it up would take me to the previous picture, etc. If I'm zoomed in on the image, the scroll wheel would move around the view of the image. Now in version 3, the behavior while zoomed in is the same, but if I'm zoomed out then using the scroll wheel does nothing. Am I missing something here?

Calm down. When zoomed in and editing an image you can use the magic mouse just fine. If a brushes dialog is open just hold down the space bar and you can scroll around the image. Let go of the space bar to use the brush. Swipe up and down to adjust the brush size (after releasing the space bar). A two finger swipe scrolls to the next or previous image. You can change some of this behavior based on how you have the preferences set for the mouse. For example, if you uncheck Two Fingers-Swipe Left/Right to Navigate, then you have to move the cursor into the filmstrip at the bottom (while in split screen) in order to scroll through the images. With Two Fingers-Swipe Left/Right to Navigate selected then you can move through the images in split screen by using two fingered swipes while the cursor is in the image in the edit window.

Sorry JJakucyk, didn't realize. I've been using a Magic Mouse since it came out. My iMac came with one as well. The swipe gesture also works on my MacBook Pro so perhaps this will be helpful to others. Have you tried holding down a modifier key while you scroll? Since a scroll wheel (or ball) is an analog device it can only support one mode of operation at a time. It would be necessary to use a modifier key or driver software to change its behavior. Since I don't have one any more I can't test it out.

The point is - last week we could navigate our Aperture photos with a scroll wheel the way we liked. We could use a mighty mouse, magic mouse, or a logitech. It worked the way we liked it. Now, we can't and it is frustrating. Others may choose to "swipe", or use the arrow keys. Now we are forced to adapt our style to the program. For me, it has really slowed my work flow. Unfortunately, I guarantee that Apple will not give that functionality back. They removed it from iPhoto 2 versions ago and it has never returned. Apple thinks we don't need it so they took it away.

this is ridiculous, i cant even drag the scroll bar at the bottom when i have a photo selected. i have to deselect the photo to scroll through split view.

how am i supposed to select mutiple files to stack/edit when i can't navigate in any way to select mulitple photos?

i was annoyed by magic mouse bouncing through a bunch of photos when i was editing, but that was only a problem over the mian viewer. the browser still needs the ability to scroll when mouse is over that area.

I have just read this thread and have not seen any mention of the preference setting to enable scrolling in the Viewer.

In the General pane of the preferences there is a check box - Scroll to navigate photos in the Viewer. With this preference checked I can use the scroll wheel on my mouse to move through photos in both Split View and Viewer modes.

In split view mode, hovering over the Viewer and scrolling with the mouse moves through the photos displayed in the Viewer. Hovering over the film strip and scrolling with the mouse moves the film strip left or right leaving the photo in the Viewer unchanged until a new photo is selected in the film strip.

In Viewer mode scrolling with the mouse moves through the photos.

Am I misunderstanding the problem being discussed here?
