Unable to calibrate laser power level for this media

when ever i try to burn disks (audio) with itunes i get the above error message. (i think that is the exact wording)

So i try toast 7.01 this time i get a toast error but basically the same result disk inserted, spins up, starts to try to burn...then spits it out.
I have tried 3 different types of cd-r and all the same result, curiously the disk is untouched when unceremoniously spat out as my G4 cube tells me it is blank media...

Anyone else come across this issue?

I get the same error message. I have a 100-disc spindle of Memorex CD-R's (52X 700 mb). The first 40-50 burned with no problem. I would get the error message every once in a while just a few weeks ago, now I get it all the time with these discs. Plus the drive (UJ-845) has become noisy and is spitting out discs onto my desk when ejected.

Note: I had a few TDK discs from another spindle, so I tried those and they burn without a problem. It seems the drive has become very picky about the discs it will burn.

I found that with the Memorex discs, if I lower the burn speed to 2X, I can usually coax a burn after a few tries. But when playing the disc I just burned, the drive is VERY noisy.

I have the 3 year extended warranty on my iMac, so should I get it replaced? I've read that these low profile drives fail quite often. Maybe I should invest in a good external drive and not have to worry. I don't know.

Well, now I'm having trouble burning the Memorex CD-R's even at 2X. (see posts above). The thing is, I can still burn DVD's without a problem. I'm guessing that if I had some TDK or Fuji CD-R's they'd burn just fine. I'm not certain about that, though. So, after burning 60 or so CD-R's from a 100 pack, I'm unable to reliably burn the rest. I tried about a dozen times to burn a disc with several blanks with no luck. (iTunes 7, QT 7.1.3)

I have the 3-year extended warranty. Is this covered? I hate to make an appointment and lug my iMac down to the store just to be told it's not covered. Anyone know for sure?

I contacted Apple Care and after much discussion, I ended up going the DIY route. The replacement Superdrive arrived today (same UJ-845 model as I had already - this one assembled Sept 2006). It was a snap to install. My ability to burn discs has been restored. DHL picked up the original drive this afternoon and it's on its way back to Apple.

The microfoam insert was a bit tricky. It has two holes that slide over the tiny posts that the drive slips onto. But there is also a top center guide on the case for which there is no corresponding slit in the microfoam. I had to slide the microfoam over the posts, press the microfoam against the center guide to mark the area and then remove the microfoam and cut a slit in the microfoam with a razor knife to get it to fit correctly.

I finally contacted APPLE in Sept. through the DIY installation... got the new DVD drive yesterday, installed and everything works fine, however, be careful! The sent me a CD-DVD-RW drive WITHOUT Dual Layer burning... HMMMMM, why? I pay this much money for a computer and don't get near original hardware, what's going on? THough at this point I don't think I'll ever need a Dual Layer burner if this is a problematic drive... good luck all with your problems.
