27" imac wifi problems (intermittant)

I really wish Apple had email or online support...

I have a 27" i5 imac that I bought just before Christmas, I had lots of problems with the wifi on it, it would not connect and when it did it was very slow, all while my macbook and iphone in the same room showed full signal and a fast rock solid connection. I rang Apple support, it took ages but they were very helpful and eventually we solved it and in the end it seemed to be WPA that was the problem and whilst I was not happy switching to WEP it seemed to work so I went with it.

Fast forward a month or so and I have started having problems again, it is fine when I boot but as the day goes on it gets slower and slower before finally refuses to connect at all. I am wondering if this could be something over-heating but in truth I am puzzled.

Anybody else having issues?

I am having the same exact problem. Bought a 27 inch iMac about a month ago, the wireless connection was a little slow off the bat, but then I was able to fix it. Recently after turning it on the signal is picked up fine for about 15 minutes and then all of a sudden the airport can no longer pick up any wireless network. Meanwhile my iPhone and MacBook have no issues. I called apple support and they had me complete a litany of useless diagnostic tasks - emptied my cache, did a hard reboot, repaired disk permissions , etc. None of it helped. Seems it's a hardware issue. Anyone know if this is a known issue with this model? I'm afraid the airport card itself may be defective in some way.

Sorry to inform you but the WiFi issue is still there. The first hour it worked perfectly for my iMac 27", i7 3,4 Mhz but after that the same problem arised. Dropping every 10 to 15 min. Strange thing however it doesn't seem to loose connection with the router, so the wifi connection still stands, but looses the connection to the internet.

I don't know if people realy mean dropping of the Wifi connection or losing connection to the internet.

I'm not using an airport express or airport extreme router but all my other stuff like 2 cell phones and a windows 7 PC are working fine with my linksys router.

I was having the same issue and I think I fixed it. I had my Airport (actually, it is Time Capsule) set up to cater to all my devices: iMac's, MacBook and the iPad and iPod touches. The iPods can not use 802.11n so the Airport configuration was to be compatible with everything. I figured this was the issue - and I think it was. I took out my old Airport Express and plugged it into my Time Capsule, so now the iPods will be using the old Airport Express to connect from now on. For everything else, they will now use the Time Capsule which is now re-configured only for 802.11n @ 5GHz. If you don't know how to do that, click EDIT on the Time Capule (or Airport), select WIRELESS tab and click the button at bottom for WIRELESS OPTIONS. Select 802.11n only (5Ghz) for radio mode.

Before I had done this, World of Warcraft had a lot of latency and occasionally dropped offline. After I did this, WoW has very little latency and game play is improved a lot. Too early to know if the dropping off the network is resolved but at least I see immediate improvement.

The solution that worked for me!

  1. Go to the Apple icon in the top left corner, click About This Mac, and then click More Info…
  2. Look for Network and then click AirPort below it. This will take a second as your Mac loads all the wifi networks available.
  3. Find your network and look for your Channel number.
  4. Look through the other networks and see what channel they are on. If you see a lot of other networks using the same channel as your router then this may be your problem. Look for a channel number in the range of 1 to 11 not being used, or the number used least.
  5. Log into your router.
  6. Go to your wifi settings, this will vary for all routers, but on my D-Link it was undermanual wireless wifi setup. Change the wireless channel to the channel you chose in step 4 and turn off Auto Channel Scan if that is a setting on your router.

That’s it, connect to your wifi network and if things worked it should be much faster. If it did not work try another channel and the reset method mentioned earlier in this article if you haven’t already. If neither of these methods work you might have a bigger problem and may need to send or take your Mac into Apple. You could also pick up a wireless adapter which was going to be my next step, since lugging my iMac into an Apple store didn’t seem like much fun.

Makhs117 is onto something here i think. Download istumblr which will give you visibility of the details of your neighbours' networks as well as your own. You can see signal strength, channel, security etc. My imac is a fair way from my router and is getting by on a signal strength of only 27%. I thought this was the problem, and it may be part of the problem, but i then moved closer to the router and signal strength improved to 52%, but i still had the conection problems. Changing the router channel to a less used one does seem to have improved the situation, even with a signal strength of 27%. Try it.

Worked for me for about two days but I turned my iMac on this morning and had to start going through Network, Assistance, Diagnostics, again. I have now restarted my router and modem and everything seems to be working fine again, but time will tell. Glad the "genius's" at mac could help out so much while average joe Makhs was finally the man to pull through on such a STUPID mac flaw. It's 2012 and Mac, of all companies can't figure out how to get Wifi to work in their $2000 computer?

I had the same WiFi issues with my iMac 2011. The Lion Update 10.7.3 did not solve this issue. I had to do multiple things to solve the wifi issue

1. Cleared the Caches Folder from HD/Library/Caches

2. Removed the Network.Identification.PList file from HD/Library/Preferences/System Configuration

3. Used the Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions

4. Selected my Mac HD from StartUp and Pressed the RESTART button from that utility.

5. Rejoined my home network using network utility

This seemed to have solved my iMac's problem of intermittent wifi and wifi not connected after waking up the computer from sleep. 🙂

I had the same problem but I fixed it.

Problem: Slow Wifi on iMac 27" Wifi w/ Airport Express.

* But MacBook Pro Wifi was fine.

* Android Phone Wifi was fine.

* Roku Netflix Wifi was fine, etc...

* Also had older version AirPort Express connected to network.

It started happening after I restarted my iMac.

Solution: From Tony Martin Above

On the Airport Express settings, "select WIRELESS tab and click the button at bottom for WIRELESS OPTIONS. Select 802.11n only (5Ghz) for radio mode."

Hi,

I just started experiencing the same problem.

My Wifi cuts out after a short period of inactivity.

If I leave a web page and come back to it, I am referred to a blank diagnostics page saying I could not connect to the internet.

I try to refresh the page, close Safari and nothing.

I have to restart the the Wifi from the diagnostics box and choose my Wifi server, the red dots on the check list turn green and it tells me I am connected.

Same thing just started on my other Imac ... both purchased since July last year.

The ipad and phone are all fine, so it"s an imac wifi issue... the wifi is only partially working aftera period of time...

Both my systems have Lion now and it only started in the last 2 weeks.

Come on Apple .. this has got to be a fix over a coffee ?

Feb 15, 2012 2:58 PM in response to neil74

Hi,

Since the latest update my Imac has also started having wifi dropping errors. This seems to happen mostly after sleep mode but sometimes when I leave the machine for more than 10 mins or so. I have so far tried everything suggested and still nothing works.

This is a total and utter disgrace Apple. I spent over £1000 on this machine and yet keeping a wifi connection is proving more difficult on this machine than my f*cking phone! I am seriously considering taking this machine back as it is clearly faulty and getting a replacement and not updating it until they get a proper fix for this!

Rant over for now, I may be back!

I have the same WiFi problem too. It become slower then disconnects.

I can see the network and other networks available.

If I turn WiFi OFF and ON again the wifi is fine for a while.

10.7.3. made no difference.

iMac i7 27" 2.8 late 2009

My Macbook Pro alongside has no problem at all and is stable.
