error(?) while exporting slideshow

Hi,
so while I was exporting a slideshow with about about 100 photos at 1080p (high def.) the bar that shows the progress stops moving when it is two thirds done and the preview thumbnail thing next to it goes pitch black and it stays that way. In the end I had to cancel the export and give up on the slideshow.

If anyone has any idea of why this is happening please tell me...

(at the same time i was monitoring my cpu and temp using istat pro. i'm not sure if dashboard was causing the problem but who knows?)

thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you have any idea which photo it's hanging on? Duplicate the sideshow (click on the sideshow icon in the left hand pane and type Command+D). Open the duplicate slideshow, select all of the thumbnails in the tray at top. With all thumbnails selected, drag the first photo to the end of the tray. This will reverse the order of the slides.

Now export the slideshow and see where it freezes if it does freeze. If it doesn't freeze, reverse the order of the photos and export again.

ok i'm trying that now.

by the way i have also tried other ways to resolve to this problem such as:
-clearing all of my caches
-command alt+pr restart
-splitting my slideshow in half and exporting them (78 photos per half)
-and lowering my slideshow resolutions

but all with no avail......ill try your (OldToad) attempt and reply soon if it has worked.

Yup. i've fixed the error. i had to rebuild the whole library. i also noticed that the exporting thumbnail does go black as all the photos were processed. a talk with applecare told me that the programs enters a different stage of encoding when the photos have processed. because i was exporting in 1080 HD the processing bar only moving one pixel every 2 minutes. it took a long time but the problem was finally fixed.

THANKS GUYS FOR YOUR GREAT HELP!!! 😀

Thanks Todd for the quick response.. I tried the display option( in my case it is 1422x800) in the 3 times and all of them didn't finish, later I tried the lower resolutions and it worked with the mobile and medium resolutions. but the quality is not acceptable
later I tried the large resolution (in my case it is 960 x 540) and since it looks that it will take a long time I decided to have a walk for 1 hour and when I came back I saw the same error.
some posts talked about the sleeping mac so I decided to try keeping my mac awake so I tried the large resolution again while I was surfing the web from face book to future shop to amazon and to my surprise the slide show was completed successfully (400 pic 12 minutes 1Gb). it worked nicely on the mac then i decided to put it on DVD so I used iDVD but didn't know how so I just burned the file to a DVD which worked on the my mac but failed to work on my sony DVD.... if u have any suggestions or tips I will appreciate it

You need to use iDVD to make a disk that will play in a DVD player or other computer.

1 - open iDVD and select a theme.
2 - click on the "+" button and select Slideshow.

3 - open the slideshow window in iDVD and drag the movie file into it. (Do not move the movie from it's location on the hard drive till you've burned the DVD project to disk).

4 - finish up the iDVD project and save as a disc image: File->Save as Disk Image.
5 - mount the disk image and open DVD player and play. If the project plays OK in DVD Player the encoding was good.
6 - burn to disc with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Adding the movie to the slideshow rather than to the menu area will let you scale it to the TV save area like you can with still photos:

Set the scale to TV save area in iDVD's preferences:

I had this same error (-9459) when trying to export in various presets and custom settings.
It seems to be linked to iPhoto not liking the computer or monitor going into sleep mode when exporting large slideshows. I just followed the comment mentioned earlier and in System Preferences/Energy Saver made the screen and hard drive not sleep before exporting from iPhoto. It worked straight away!

So give that a try and just adjust the pref settings once done.

I was also getting the error (-9459) upon export of slideshows. REBUILDING THE LIBRARY SOLVED THE PROBLEM. What I did: hold down option and command and lunch iPhoto, select the second option (rebuild all thumbnails) and last option (reclaim disk space) from the tick off options given, wait about ten minutes for the library to rebuild itself (i got a color spinner for about a minute then a progress bar), export slideshow as before. No more problems.

I suspect this will sort a lot of the problems discusses in this thread, and is not that time consuming in the scheme of things. My iPhoto library is about 60GB and it took appx ten minutes.

Hi,
I have followed the advices above by rebuilding the iPhoto library & stop the sleep mode for generating slideshow by iPhoto. However, it still fails with following message. Could somebody help how can I generate slideshow. Thanks.

Your Library is corrupted.

That

> Exception Codes: KERN PROTECTIONFAILURE

is always a Data Related issue.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

If that fails:

Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

TD

Thanks. I tried option 1 & 2 these few days. I had even deleted all the iphoto photos and re-input from the data source (backup diskette) and retried option 1 & 2. I still failed when exporting the slideshow using iphoto. I did it over night and went to sleep. Next morning I found my MacBook Pro was hang and need to press on/off button for few seconds to reboot the machine. I had even set the enegry save mode to 2 hours and turned off the screen saver.

Should I re-install the iPhoto? and How?
Thanks in advance.
Daniel
