Move to Trash - This item will be deleted immediately?

Suddenly starting today I've started to get the message "this item will be deleted immediately" when I move anything from any folder to the trash.

Anyone know how to return to normal behavior and/or causes of the problem?

iMac 24", Mac OS X (10.6.2), Bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse

Have tried this several times and still can't get trash to work properly. Only have this problem with my iMac running 10.6.4. Am I missing something? I copied and pasted the commands from Niel's post and I never got a prompt for my administrator password

I was getting nuts by this... but this terminal trick worked perfectly!
Dont know at all what its about just happy that its over!

i know this topic has been marked as answered, but i'd like to give my two cents as i just had this problem appear:

verify and repair permissions then relaunch the finder from the force quit menu. done.
