Cracks and scratches on unibody macbook

I have a new (3 month) old unibody plastic macbook. It has always been housed in an incase custom case. Never dropped. Always used on my lap. It has developed scratches all over the lid - only the lid. The lid has small hairline cracks coming from either side.
Taking it to the apple store, I was told that I must have abused the laptop. Also that the cracks come from opening up the lid all the way against the stop.
I guess my question would be, has anyone else reported similar scratching or cracking. This seems somewhat extreme that I would see this after so short a time.

I have a white MacBook which is not a Unibody one.
The policarbonate body has showed lots of problems, and due to some problem, I believe, Apple decided to make it as unibody. However, the problem is the material itself. I believe the crack is caused by heat captured inside of the enclosure.
So, i expected that the new MacBook would have the same problem, because it also used the same polycarbonated body.

Also, I'm really sorry to say this, but isn't it manufactured in China?
When Apple's quality was the best was when many of them were manufactured in Japan and Singapore or Taiwan, not China.
I believe LC II or III was also manufactured in S. Korea by LG. ( I had a friend there. ) The quality was not bad at that time but the material quality was a little bad.

Some of my friends bought Dell desktop and found out that their power supply didn't work from the 1st day. They were also made in.. you know..

Although companies are pushed to build cheaper products, but I believe there is some threshold people can put up with. Being cheaper is good, but being too cheap sacrificing quality at non-acceptable level is not good.

It turned out that recall cost and repair cost went up, and 3M moved their factory from China to S. Korea due to that reason. (Probably there are some remained in China though.) They found out that recall/repair/replacement cost can be higher than the higher cost to manufacture products with better quality.
As far as I know, VW also tried to find a way to get out from China, but somehow failed.

I too have just taken my 5 month old MacBook back to the retailer due to the same hairline cracks appearing along the hinge. This is clearly a design fault as we have not forced the lid back too far. We were told by the shop that the cracks were our fault! This is an offensive statement and when we said we had seen other people posting here with the same fault, were told "we're not aware of any problems." Come on Apple you can do better than this!

I cannot comment on the quality of product or service that apple offers in the states but if you talk about how they are in this part of the world , here's a little glimpse....
Macbook's we get here are made in china, accessories are made in taiwan..!! Talk about quality, there is a significant difference in the plastic used and a considerable difference in the overall feel. Service, well you can forget about any of those "goodwill" replacements.. Any serious issue and they say "we'll get in touch with apple and see how it goes"..!!
I would like to share one of my personal experiences.. I bought a new macbook in the month of march, got a speck case which claimed it protects your notebook from scratches. Opened the case after a month and found the case itself caused scuff scratch marks on the sides of my mac. It seemed there was a problem with the case and it fit a little to tight. I wrote in to speck who are willing to provide me with a replacement but apple store ??. All they could come up was "There is nothing we can do about it..".
Would someone tell me, where am I fault here..? All i'm left behind with is a month old notebook which is scratched so bad that it looks nowhere less than a year old..!! I would never ever recommend a MAC to any of my friend in India atleast...(

I have this exact problem 😟
Just noticed today there is a crack on the other hinge, the first crack appeared within two weeks of owning the machine and you as you can imagine I was obviously not throwing it around or anything, treating it very carefully infact.
I hope someone can find out if this problem can be fixed, I dont mind the cracks themselves but i don't want them causing internal issues a few months down the line.

Hi,
I'm brazilian I bought my macbook in London and it has the same problem as yours( 6 months). I just realized it and upset me a lot, so I'm taking it to the warranty tomorrow and as soon as I can I hope to sell it.
so many expectation, so much money, to result in a deep frustration....
Does anybody there have a positive news about it???

I have the same problem January 2010 cracked both hinges and they replaced it for me no problem, but now after 6 months It's crack again one of the hinges, I was very gentle with it still crack so now I was put on hold still waiting for Apple engineer to come back with the technician what to do with my macbook
I think this is a product issues

The top case cracking is a known issue, they should replace it for free. I had so many problems with mine that I called them, they looked up my repair history (Logic board, RAM, SuperDrive, HDD x2, power adapter, top case x 4) and they just replaced my late 2007 MB with a new mid 2010 one, despite them all being covered under warranty.

I have had this problem on three separate occasions now. I called AppleCare (ALWAYS call, the help you receive talking to a store first is useless) and was polite, as that will get you farther in explaining my problem. The first time this happened my macbook was under warranty, the last two times, it was not and has been fixed for free all three times. Mind you this process of repeatedly taking it to the store which is miles away and having to pick it up another day are annoying. But if you want yours fixed I advise doing the same, call AppleCare, in warranty or not and explain your problem calmly. Apple is aware of the issue and has been quietly replacing the parts. I am tired of going to the store since this is my third time in under two years, so I am trying the Customer Service route on Monday. If you are frustrated about your macbook I suggest you do the same.
