Cracks and scratches on unibody macbook

I have the same problem.. Today, while cleaning my MacBook, i noticed two cracks between screen and hinges.. It's not a bad use of it, because it is only 8 months old, and i have used it in the best way...

It's not a good thing for Apple.... If i spend a thousand euros to buy a MacBook, i want a PERFECT computer... Not cracks on the case, and a battery that doesn't work properly (160 loadcycles and 86% status)

Does anyone know if this crack issue is covered by warranty?

I have the same conflict. My MacBook is cracking o-n each side of the hindges. Left and right. I'm so furious that apple refuses to repair my computer when others are doing the same. They claimed I dropped my $1000 pice of equitment. Tis has been the best computer ive had so far. I don't want it to be just another regret. Ive never dropped my laptop before. Its always been on my lap, or at the island at the kitchen... Also when ever i open it, the cracking progresses. ):

I have the same problem. The service guy told me that he had seen the same kind of cracks on at lot of the plastic, unibody macbooks. My warranty expired two weeks ago and the cracks appeard a few days ago.. The service guy told me that they would try to make Apple pay for it but they couldn't promise me anything.

Due to the struggle to get Apple to pay for the service it will take a couple of weeks. I don't know whats worse, being without my computer for a couple of weeks or the fact that I might have to pay for the service myself (400 dollars!).

My white unibody Macbook has extensive amounts of small scratches on the palm rest and the rest of the notebook's inside. The plastic around the ports is also starting to chip off. Very poor quality plastic in my opinion. The only reason the lid has not scratched similarly is because I've had a hard cover on it since a couple days after I bought the laptop.

I have to say, I am really dissapointed that Apple would use such low-quality plastic in their laptops. I absolutely should not have to buy a case for my freaking computer! It should be designed to take some wear and tear for pete's sake! It should be noted that I treat my macbook VERY carefully, yet it seems even resting my hands on the palm rest is enough to scratch the finish. Oh well, I guess that's what you get with a product that's Made in China.

I am from DUBAI, UAE and I have one Unibody Macbook Mid-2010. I bought it last July 2010 and after 5 months (December 2010) It has crack on the hinge mostly right side and now its starting with the left side. I go to the store where I buy and they told me to go to the premium reseller and they told me to call the support numbers outside UAE. They cannot even help me with my problem.

Now, when I call the United States support since there is no number for UAE, the customer service advice me AGAIN to go to premium reseller and complain.

They keep on passing me from one person to another without helping with my concern or just acknowledging my disappointments. Rather, they just keeping me away to this issue and said nothing.

Oh my goodness! I love apple and Ive been using the product for 10 years and now I have this issue with warranty and no one can help me? Where is justice here?

I know they are aware of this issue and they cannot even release a statement nor trying to fix my laptop. Some have been granted a replacement and repair. And me, I never have anything.

I have the same exact problem. It's super disappointing because I had just purchased this macbook for school 4 months ago! You would think with how much the MacBooks cost that the design would be more durable and the hinges wouldn't start to crack... I have a phone call appointment with a technical supporter tomorrow but I'm seriously worried that I wont be able to fix it because I don't have the warranty. I have just recently bought this so I think they will make exception or I hope so... Either way I'm uber upset because I treat this MacBook like my child... I keep it way clean, I dust off the keyboard, I make sure I don't get anything on the screen or keys, and I even clean the bottom of it and the outside of the top... So I'm not sure what I'm not doing because I am so super duper careful with it and now it has a inch hair line fracture on the left hinge. I am genuinely upset and I just hope that apple can do something to fix it, because this MacBook is super special...I got it for my birthday and it's the only thing that actually helps me with my school work.

I have the exactly same problem with my 9 months old unibody macbook.
It has a hairline crack starting from the corner of the right hinge. I can see another developing from the left.

This is such a disappointment as it seems to be an inherent design defect.
My macbook has never left home. It has been literally stuck on my desk without being moved around.

If this is not acknowledged by Apple I can honestly say there are ethical issues as well as cracking ones.

I started to have the same problem with my MacBook unibody late 2009 with signs of cracking so i walked in to my local apple store and made an appointment and they told me they would fix it and that it was a known issue. can't wait to get my MacBook back 🙂 from repare

Doubt it. I just got home from the Apple store in Philadelphia, and they were far from helpful. They were nasty to me about not purchasing the extended Applecare, and also told me that this was not a "known" issue and was definitely the result of my negligence or damage to the computer. I am going to try another store location next week and print out many of these forum discussion boards to take along with me.

I Just got my macbook in december '10 and I too have noticed cracks on either side of the hinges tonight. I don't have a warranty on it but I've only had it for about 3 months so I don't know if anything can be done about it...

I got my Macbook in August '10 and just noticed cracks on it as well. After reading this thread I went to the Apple store and they are going to replace it no questions asked. I do have to wait for the part to come in but at least they're covering it! :))

The Genius told me that the reason it happened is that I push the display back too fast so overtime it cracks. I guess I'll just have to be more careful!

I have had my Macbook for a couple years and it just recently started cracking on the cover, right above the apple icon. Anyone know why this is happening?
