Cracks and scratches on unibody macbook

I have a new (3 month) old unibody plastic macbook. It has always been housed in an incase custom case. Never dropped. Always used on my lap. It has developed scratches all over the lid - only the lid. The lid has small hairline cracks coming from either side.
Taking it to the apple store, I was told that I must have abused the laptop. Also that the cracks come from opening up the lid all the way against the stop.
I guess my question would be, has anyone else reported similar scratching or cracking. This seems somewhat extreme that I would see this after so short a time.

I also have the same problem - cracks on macbook white unibody (late 2009 version). One is where power cable is plugged in and two are on the back part of the screen.

I tried the service, but they charged me like 100 USD for just checking and concluding that crack (at that time it was only one, near the power cable connection port) wasnt apple's responsibility. But no real explanation was given how it could have appeared. They said maybe i havent used it carefully enough.. Well i use my computer a lot, it's the main tool for my design studies, i carry it around a lot and so on (isnt that the purpose of laptop?). But i know for sure it has never been dropped and always is carried around in a protective case.. So i wont admit my fault.. especially after noticing last cracks.. this is too much now..

other than that i love apple.. but macbook white as a tool for a student in terms of built quality has let me down..

HI, I BROUGHT MY MACBOOK IN JAN 2011, BRANDNEW, if mine cracked out of warranty i would finely drill out the ends of the cracks. To end further spreading of the crack. Then use windscreen SIKAFLEX industrial polyethelene i think silicon.I think it only comes in black but is very reliable. It is the liquid gaffer tape i use.If your really clever a white epoxy could be used too.I have used a red polycarbonate cover by INCIPIO supplied at Apple store Midland WA.It stops scrapes and cracks, mine is as new.But am careful too.It wasnt expensive and comes in many colors.Wash your hands .regards LandRoverPETER.

Update: I brought my macbook to local reseller in Latvia and they were very responsive. My computer was taken to the service, where after inspection i was asked to call to apple care. They were well aware about this "crack" issue, so my computer's body was repleced free of charge!

To all who have been rejected by their local resellers my advice is to call directly to apple care and inform about the issue. I believe in most cases they will find the ways to help you.

I have a mid-2010 MacBook with the same cracks in the hinges. It is out of warranty and I am now living in Thailand. The Mac Service center took photos and are sending them into Apple headquarters in Singapore. I hope they are as responsive as many of you have experienced. This is definitely a flaw. I have never dropped, misused or opened the screen too far.

Do these threads get read by the right people at Apple? I certainly hope so. It's a drag to spend for quality and have something like this happen.

I've taken my MacBook to the covent garden store today and am having the entire screen replaced because of this fault, free of charge and my MacBook is 11 months out of warrantee (23 months old - with no apple care) if anybody has been denied this replacement service then feel free to contact me and I will send you a copy of my receipt so that you can display this to your local apple store as this is a problem. It also states on my receipt that the repair is covered as per quality program.

Hi, I'm from Italy!

I bought my macbook unibody white during the summer holiday 2010 in New York.

I have the same problems of you on my mac...it's cracked in the left corner of the trackpad just 2 weeks ago.

I went to the Apple Store in Rome and they told me that if the Apple knows about this problem maybe they replace our macbook with the new ones as they have done with the old macbook. I hope so!!!

Hi,

like all of you my unibody macbook (late 2009) started cracking on the left side of the top lid right at the corner of the hinge. I didn't pay too much attention but with time, the crack grew more and it started to appear on the right side as well. I called apple and they told me that they couldn't do anything because my computer is out of warranty but I insisted and told them my problem anyways. They said that they had receive lots of complaints of cases like mine (in Canada) for the same model of macbook so they gave me an appointment to the closest apple store yesterday so they could take a look and determine it was a crack caused by impact or not.

When I got to the apple store they already knew my situation, looked at the computer and told me that was going to be replaced at no cost. They replaced the whole screen so I got 300$ worth of parts and labor for free. Not long ago I replaced the bottom case as well so now I have an "almost-brand-new" macbook with no scratches.

I think Apple should do an international recall or something like that if they already are aware of the problem.
