like all of you my unibody macbook (late 2009) started cracking on the left side of the top lid right at the corner of the hinge. I didn't pay too much attention but with time, the crack grew more and it started to appear on the right side as well. I called apple and they told me that they couldn't do anything because my computer is out of warranty but I insisted and told them my problem anyways. They said that they had receive lots of complaints of cases like mine (in Canada) for the same model of macbook so they gave me an appointment to the closest apple store yesterday so they could take a look and determine it was a crack caused by impact or not.

When I got to the apple store they already knew my situation, looked at the computer and told me that was going to be replaced at no cost. They replaced the whole screen so I got 300$ worth of parts and labor for free. Not long ago I replaced the bottom case as well so now I have an "almost-brand-new" macbook with no scratches.

I think Apple should do an international recall or something like that if they already are aware of the problem.

yep 09 unibody cracked... had the top case replaced in 2010 with hinge cracks under warranty...  had the top and bottom replaced this summer with hinge cracks on the top case and a crack from the ethernet port across to the keyboard 10 months after the warranty ran out all covered by Apple.  Its a laptop im afraid to put on my lap cause it might crack again..So I babied it even more... Thats right its December and it has cracked again on the top case by the hinge, should have bought the Pro... Im really upset cause I love this machine...

    Same issue here !

I just spent more than 45 minutes at the Apple store and 2 hours with customer support and cutomer satisfaction with no real resolution.

Apple refuse to acknoledge the issue with my Macbook mid-2009.  4 months out of waranty they replaced the palmrest (top case) because they said that it is a know issue.  Now 12 month (24 month old Macbook) out of waranty they refuse to repair it under their customer satisfaction policy even if it is basically the same issue but to the bottom case instead of the top case.

It is trully innaceptable for a 2 year old laptop to have so many issues related to the casing.  That Macbook never left the house and is always handled with care.

The Laval Apple store agreed to do give me a 50% reduction on the repair.  So I end up paying for the repair and I have no clue how long the bottom case is going to last.

I am very unsatisfied with the outcome of this issue.  Obviously,  I am not the only one stuck with a Crackbook

Where is your costumer satifaction policy Apple ?

    shdox ,

I have just discovered the same cracking on my macbook, and I would really appreciate it if you, or anyone else who has been successful in getting the cracks repaired for free, could send me a copy of your receipt as well. My e-mail is:

    Thank you!

I can't believe Apple hadn't  recognise this fault yet! Would you please be so kind to send me the same invoice? My e-mail is:

    Thank you all so much!

I'm sorry I can't give you a copy of my receipt because it got wet and the printing is gone so know it is just a blank piece of paper but if you bought your macbook at the apple store and registred your product they can check your records and get the purchase date. That is what I did to get mine repaired and even though the warranty was expired since longtime ago.

If they refuse to help you out go to another store, most of the time the managers refuse to give you the repair for free because they have not seen other cases like these so give it a try somewhere else and they might be aware of this problem

I bought my MacBook White mid 2010 back in October 2010. Last year(2011) in March-April I notice small scratches(cracks?) just above the hinges, they were hardly noticeable but in June the cracks got much much longer, they were still hairline thin but about 1.5 cm and 0.7 cm long. I took it to Apple Genius Bar and they say that they are aware of the issue and will replace the screen lid for me free of charge(I still had my 1 year warranty). The genius also mentioned that they would even replace it if the MacBook would be out of warranty. Last week I noticed two hairline cracks above the hinges and they are about 0.5cm long. I'm taking it to Apple Genius Bar and hopefully they will replace it free of charge(my warranty runed out and I don't have apple care). I have to admit that I'm really disappointed with Apple lately, they products are not as good quality as they used to be, I feel like this days they just want to make as much money as they can with minimum cost, which results in crappy materials being use while the products are being manufactured.

I Have Had The Same Problem Aswell, There is A Slightly Big Crack On The Side Of My Screen And The Screen Is Almost Splitting In Half! I Am Getting Sick Of Seeing How To Fix This And Apple Will Not Do It, I Also Have A Lost Screw On The Bottom Of My Laptop And Apple Do Not Sell Replacements, I Expect When I Buy (Or In My Case, ONLY Birthday Present) A $1650 Laptop That It Is In Good Tact, Pathetic, I Hope It Doesn't Happen When I Have To Upgrade To A Macbook Pro For School! Does Anybody Know How To Fix It Thats Under $100.00?

I got my macbook (late 2009) shortly after it came out and about a year later a small crack started forming on the ethernet port which is continuing to grow.  When I went in to the Apple store, the girl flat out told me it was out of warranty by a few months and I'd have to pay the full repair (and that it would take weeks because they were so busy - beginning of the school year).  Recently I am finding more and more cracks forming (one coming out of each hinge and one coming out of each of the top corners of the screen. They are perfectly symetrical in both cases so its clearly not anything I have done to it.  I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and has gotten it fixed free of charge? I'm going to call in tonight and hopefully get somewhere with this.  I'm afraid that at this rate my entire macbook is just gonna crumble, and for the money I paid, this is ridiculous.  Should have bought the pro..
