Honestly, I'm ****** over this since it is the same effects I saw with 10.6.1. and my external monitor a Samsung 2032 NW. After installing the update to 10.6.3 and restarting I cannot get the system to cooperate with the external monitor just like I grew use to doing after the fiasco with OS 10.6.1.

I used to plug everything in, including the Samsung, and push the start buttons on both the monitor and MacBook Pro and then close the laptop. The monitor's button stayed a steady blue until the startup was complete. Then a "check signal cable" warning would come up after a few seconds. I could then push any key on the external keyboard and that monitor would come on as it should.

What did Apple do this time?

I have exactly the same problem after the 10.6.3 update. Using a Samsung 2232BW. Had this problem when I first bought the Alu MacBook and waited 4 months for a fix. Now my monitor does not work at all. I'm limited to the my Macbook screen. Apple's quality control is appalling. I need to use the external screen for photo & movie editing.
I think I'm moving back to PCs very soon. Getting tired of the hassle of it all. At least my PC does not render pieces of hardware useless!
Come on Apple sort this out it is not good enough!!

Apple if this were a first-time problem I'd treat it as I did then with an "oops" and ask you to fix it. I'm seeing no difference between back then and now. I've even reset the PRAM and restarted the computer several times with and without the external connected. I've reset the monitors and made sure that they are gathered.

Now, when I restart with the monitor attached the white startup screen shows on the external, if connected, but beyond that stage the external monitor flickers in and out. The screen, I briefly see, fits to what should be there but becomes black. There is no difference between what I saw back the first time this happened and now. Why?

Same problem! I cannot get full resolution to work. Works with a lower resolution though, but that screws up my screen layout.

Try downloading and installing SwitchResX and see if that resolves your issue.

That's not a long term fix, just a data point that will help debug the issue.

    Same problem with SwithcResX.

Make sure you are not part of the recall by checking out the Apple document MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues.

I'm having the same exact problem with a unibody macbook (not pro model) and a samsung 20" 206BW external monitor hooked using VGA adapter.

One weird thing is that I've a double entry in the menubar monitor resolution list for the maximum resolution (1600*1050@60Hz). One of them gives a normal display, the other shows the same symptoms.

In clamshell mode, that I can no longer use with 10.6.3, there's no way to force the right setting, which I could do before, although not a fail safe process.

Will this be fixed at some point ??

Although, is there any chance that switching to DVI connection would solve the problem ?

am having the same problem too..

Samsung 225MD. Worked fine until 10.6.3 update and now it flickers. Was running at 1680 x 1050 at 60Hz and now i have to run it at 1600 x 1500 at 60Hz to see the screen but its blurry

But reading other posts it seems to be mainly issues with samsung monitors...=S

Thanks for the reply satcomer. Certainly my issue is not related to the recall. I have the first gen Macbook Aluminium not Pro. Also my issues are not the same.
This issue was resolved with an update around a year ago after many people were experiencing the same issue. Currently unless I am mistaken the reoccurring problem is affecting Samsung monitors only.

Anyone with Samsung monitors experiencing the problem also with the DP>DVI adapter ?

I have the same flicker problem since I went on Snow Leopard. Having Macbook unibody (not pro) + VGA + Hyundaï W220D. Before 10.6.3 I use to solve the problem by checking/unchecking video mirroring in the monitor preferences and the flickers stopped (And I had to do this EVERYTIME I turn on my laptop). But since the last update it does not work anymore. The only way I can get a fix image on the external screen is to use video mirroring all the time. But I'm stuck with the 1440x900 resolution on a 22"... My external screen is just unusable.

Have any of you made sure that your external monitor and LCD were set to the correct resolutions? I'm now not certain that I'm certain of that. If any of you are certain, that bombs out my feeble hope to correct the problem.

The issue here is with a Dell 24" monitor. All OSX updates up to 10.6.2 had no issues. 10.6.3 now produces green pixel artefacts and flickers on the external monitor. If I drop the resolution to 1024 x 768, there are no flickers. Most recent MBP being used to drive the external display. Looks really bad and makes photo editing in Aperture useless. Need a fix Apple.

    Hello all,

Just to say i got the same problem as many users. Before the update 10.6.3 everything was ok but now I symply can't work with my highest resolution ( to know : 1680*1050 ). I have to work in 1600*1000 and that very weak...
I tried to reboot with or without the mini display port VGA pluged, delete monitors preferences, launched a full onyx clean, create a new user, reset the ram but nothing worked till now !
    I got a macbook unibody ( 2008 ) and i use a Samsung T220 with a minidisplay VGA.
If anyone got a solution, please tell because im loosing my nerves on that...
