Video Playlists on iPad's iPod application

Am I doing something wrong or are video playlists totally broken on the iPad? When you get to the end of a video podcast that was launched from a playlist, instead of it playing the next video podcast on the playlist like it does on iPods, iPhones and Apple TV, it just dumps you out to the "Videos" application. It appears that there's no way to play multiple video podcasts in a row without touching the device to launch the next one each time. No other Apple device works like this! (and shouldn't)

"Solution found for the iPad!

Create a playlist for which the first song is an mp3, not a video. Make the rest videos.

Start the playlist in iPod, and press the home screen - for some reason this won't work if the song is a video first. However you can scrub forward before you press the home screen if you like.

WAIT FOR THE FIRST VIDEO TO START PLAYING. Then press the video app on the home screen, and it will start the videos playing. You can't forward to the next song, but you can scrub forward. Not that that is much use to you. However at least you can watch your video playlist at the gym right! "

This works great! Only issue is that I found that I have to sync the playlist in both the "Movie" tab AND the "Music" tab to be able to get a combined play list. I name the song "AAA" so it pops to the top of the playlist (happens to be the theme song from the old TV show "The A-Team"!).
Funny thing - the guys atthe Apple store know nothing about this issue and have noted the 'work-around' for thier customers! I make sure to point 'em here as many say they don't visit this site.

Well I have been using the workaround suggested by DomintheUK for some time now (thanks!) and now I have upgraded the OS to 4.2.1. I hoped this problem would be history with the new OS, but it gets worse. Now the playlist only shows the mp3 track in the iPod app. All the video podcasts that are part of the playlist are not displayed in the iPod app. iTunes has synct them, they are visible in the Video app. They are also visible in the iPod app in the Video section. But they are not visible in my playlist 😟

Ditto that for me!
iPod app had lovely playlists with videos ~ play 1, back to video app then iPod app and then the playlist to move on
Now, everything is in video with no structure, only audio in iPod app.
Just killed my roi on this gadget! I'll have to go back to my clunky, but functional, laptop to watch my organised content (see iOS 4.2 iPad manual)

Come on fruit boys, give us playlists or some structure alternate or even a search field PLEASE!

Yes, this workaround doesn't seem to work in OS 4.2. However, try this:

1. Go into iTunes and select (highlight) all the movies you want to watch on your iPad (either under the movies icon on the left-hand panel or under a playlist). (Ctrl+A does this on Windows machines.) Make sure it's just movies highlighted, and no songs.

2. Once you've selected all the movies you want to watch in your iPad, right click, and choose "Get Info". Then click the "Options" tab.

3. Under "Media Kind" change the selection to "TV Show."

4. Click on the iPad icon in the left-hand panel. If you auto-sync, then skip to #4. If you manually manage, make sure under the "TV Shows" tab in the sync window on the right you have checked the "Sync TV Shows" box at the top, AND also checked your movie playlist at the bottom under "Include Episodes From Playlist." (If you didn't make a playlist and just changed the movies under the movies icon in the left panel, then check the "TV Shows" box, since they're tv shows now, not movies.)

5. Sync. When you're done, go into Videos from the home screen, and select TV shows. To the right of the first tv show listed on the left-hand side, you will see the "play" arrow. If you press that (instead of tapping the image of the video itself) then the first TV show will play, followed by all your other shows.

This won't let you shuffle them, but it's a start....

Yes, its ridiculous. I was hoping that the new 4.2.1 release would fix this, and actually things have even gotten worse. We no longer have smart playlists with podcasts on 4.2.1.
Also the person who mentioned that this works only on the iPhone (which is true), all the more reason it should work on the iPad which was made for watching videos and entertainment.
In case Apple wants to know why in the world someone would want to launch a video from the iPod and then find yourself in another app..
Every morning I have my iPad all loaded up with my favorite news programs; video and audio, and all arranged in the order I want to see them. I just want to click on the first and then start to get the whole stream of news programs, not find myself in the video app (and even worse under Movies not podcasts) at the end of the first and then have to either go back to the ipod or switch from Movies to Podcasts in the video app and choose another video podcast.

This IS NOT WHAT WE EXPECT FROM APPLE.. TERRIBLE UI!!!!

Yes, it was shocking to discover that another nice feature has disappeared - I'm joining the crowd that begs for the return of proper video-playlists. In the meantime I have ended up with this method:

1. Create a new playlist in inTunes on your Mac
2. Drop the movies you want into the playlist.
(Name the tracks 01_Title, 02_Title and so on to maintain the list in your preferred order when transferred to the iPad.)
3. Go to the playlist and select each video, right click and choose "get info".
4. Goto the "options" tab and select media type as "Podcast",
5. Connect up your iPad and drag the playlist onto your iPad menu. Mind you: I always prefer to sync my iPad (and iPod and iPhone manually), so I can not tell what will happen if you auto-sync. But if you do it my way, you should now find your podcast ready to use, both in the iPod- and Video-app.

add me to the list of displeased customers...this should be EASY to fix. Talk about the ultimate cool scenario...playing a repeating video clip or slideshow with my bose speakers connected to my iPad 2 projecting on the wall via projector connected via VGA cable to iPad.....

I can do all this now except LOOP ! argh.

I have joined the Apple forums just for this specific issue, I feel so strongly about it. As an IT professional, IMO there is no excuse for the iPad to not simply play videos in the order the user supplies. According to Apple's most recent TV ads, "we already know how to use it". EPIC FAIL. Work arounds should not have to be tolerated on this "magic" device.

Apple, hear our pleas and let us play our videos non-stop and in order!
