It seems so easy to follow your directions to remove photos from the iPad ie. create an empty folder on the desktop and then synch. However, the thousands of photos are still there in my iPad!
By the way, it doesn't ask "do you want to overwrite the contents?"
Any other suggestions???
Thanks.

Those were not my directions.
Select the iPad in iTunes.
Click the Photos tab and uncheck Sync photos.
I had a similar issue so I tried what you suyggested. However, I only had the following 3 Options.
(1) All Folders
(2) Selected Folders
(3) Include Videos
Please elaborate.
Thanks

Marghek has not posted in this thread for almost two years.
What are you trying to do?
If you uploaded the photos from your iMac via iTunes Sync, the ONLY WAY you can delete them is to reverse the process. Connect your two devices. Go to iTunes. Select "Music" from the rectangular box on the left side of the top horizontal bar, then click on "iPad" on the right side of the bar. A message will appear, "Synch photos from iPhoto," with a check box located in front of it. Uncheck the box. Click on "Sync" in the lower right corner. All iPad photos previously uploaded via the Sync process will be deleted. Believe me, you won't get rid of them any other way.
I take a lot of photos and bought IPad mainly with idea of sorting them and deleting useless ones! Sorry one that I bought it as I cannot delete whatever I need to delete - what a useless item it has turned out to be. Come on Apple, make it usable!

If you are taking photos with the iPad or using a camera then syncing the photos to the iPad with the camera connection kit, it is simple to delete them on the iPad.
The links below have instructions for deleting photos.

Okay... It's not very intuitive (and actually seems backasswards) but, I got rid of the photos I added from my mac to the ipad. I did what has been suggested:
1. Hook your iPad to the computer.
2. Open iTunes
3. Click on iPad
4. Click on "Photos" from across the top
5. Check "Sync Photos from [iPhoto]"
6. Click the radio button for "Selected albums, Events, and Faces, and automatically include [no Events]
7. Hit 'Apply' in the lower right corner
8. You'll see an error about "You will not sync photos in the future....." Agree to it.
9. Hit "Sync"
10. Added photos disappear. Camera Roll photos still available!
Not very intuitive (and I've been a mac user since 1991) !
Seems it is not possible to delete all images and videos with ways mentioned above. At least it happened to me that images and videos that I had EDITED on iPad iPhoto app did remain on the device. I used the "select no folders" trick and managed to erase all other material and Photos app showed empty. However iPhoto still had the modified files.
So, when you have copied all the pictures and videos to your Mac / PC simply remove iPhoto from the iPad. Press and hold the iPad icon until the icons start shaking and show the small circle with X. press the X and confirm. Then you can reinstall the app from iTunes in a jiffy.
Not practical, but you will get an empty iPad in terms of photos and images...
Step 1: Tap the “Photos” icon on your iPad’s home screen.
Step 2: Tap one of the photos that you want to delete from your camera roll.
Step 3: Tap the trash icon in the bottom corner of your screen.
Step 4: Tap the “Delete Photo” button to delete the photo from your Camera Roll. Repeat these steps for each photo you want to remove.
Tip
Photos deleted from your Camera Roll cannot be recovered. If you think you may need them at some point in the future, back up your photos before deleting them.

Well, I take photos and import them to the iPad with the Camera kit (no sync). Right now I have 3500+ photos on my old iPad 1. I have, with a third party app, transferred the good ones to cloud-storage and would now like to keep the last 100 shots on the pad.
The above method does not really work. It would take forever and I'd have to hire someone to do the job. And fixing this with a method that would require me to go out and purchase a computer is out of the question. I bought an iPad so that I would not need a computer.
So why are third party apps not allowed by the OS to delete photos? If that was allowed there would most probably be some apps out there where you could delete photos in a smart way. A major design flaw I would say.
Best regards
Hakan
Well,
Nobody has solved the issue of edited pictures. They resist all tricks mentioned here. Only way to delete them is to remove and reinstall iPhoto.
Just try it. Big FAIL, Apple!

Except you delete edited photos the same way you delete unedited photos.
