Saving PDFs on iPad

Am I missing something or did Apple forget to make a way to save PDF files on the iPad. On by far the best platform to read the tons of PDF files I receive there is no way on day one to do this. I'm all for developers, but this should be standard on the iPad. Even after downloading pdfHD from iTunes app store NO LUCK !

I need to save PDF files to the iPad to read offline..... Period and we shouldn't have to pay extra for it.

virtualgeo,

I think your response here addresses getting a pdf from my pc to my ipad. Any chance you could help me with how to get a pdf attachment received via email that I have opened on my ipad saved to my ipad? I had been saving them in ibooks but lost them all with the upgrade to iOS 5.1. Called Apple support and was told that PDFs saved in ibooks are not "backed up" for security reasons. They suggested I save the pdfs to keynotes which I do have on my ipad. But when I have a pdf open I am unable to find an option that allows me to save it to keynotes. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

jerrifromexcelsior,

One way to save a PDF file that you have received in an email on your iPad to your iPad is with an app that creates an "Open in" option in your email. One such app that I use is Quickoffice Pro HD. If you have this app, here's how it works.

Open your email that has the PDF attachment. Press down on the attachment until you see the "Open in" option and select Quickoffice Pro HD. The PDF file will now open and also be stored in this app. From here you can share it, email it, etc.

Hope this helps.

i did the add to itunes and sync and it worked fine, although cumbersome.

then my non-technical sister showed me how to do so directly from gmail.

it's one of the "hidden" menus i have grown to laothe on the ipad [why not just have a menu button??]

anyway, if you click the pdf attachment and it opens in the browser, just tap it once and "open in" links appear.

click the "Open in iBooks..." or the other button ("Open in...") and you'll get options to save in the kindle app or others apps you have installed.

I know this is an old post but most people who have replied appear to have missed the point completely. Here is an example that will make it clear - apologies for my verbosity. I was away from home and needed to print my boarding pass. Unfortunately my flight was with Virgin Australia and the boarding pass comes up in the website with the only option being PRINT (once you've passed that stage you are not given an option of doing it again so one chance only - yes Virgin's on line check-in system *****, but that's what you have to work with!).

Normally on my work windows laptop (excuse me for blaspheming ;-) I would simply print to the free PDF printer driver that I had installed previously (cutePDF writer) and I am asked for the name I wish to save the file to and it will then be "printed" to a pdf of that name. I can then email that to my hotel reception and get them to print it for me. Look I know there may be other ways to go about this like doing the whole process at reception in the first place, but the point is that the iPad is supposed to be convenient to use and should be able to provide this missing functionality. The only possible method I've found so far is to take a screen shot, but print to PDF would be better!

Now tell me someone - where is that functionality and what is the name of the app? I have spent money on a fewv pdf "printing" apps that supposedly provide this functionality (but DON'T) and they are laughing all the way to the bank and I am NOT happy! All apps I have allow you to SAVE a file or a webpage NOT print to a pdf file. In the example I have given above there is no way to save the boarding pass ONLY to print it.

cheers

Umm missed the point again - the original post did not describe the issue clearly. HOW do you print to a pdf file? Example - an airline boarding pass on a web site that only allows you to pint - NOT save. On a PC you can use an application like CutePDF which enables you to print to a pdf file rather than a real printer (the pdf can then be emailed and printed from another device). There is nothing available that I can see that allows you to do this on an iPad.

I do not see that you have a problem. because if you have a ticket or and receipt from an online purchase the ticket and the receipt will always be in a PDF Format.

also

If you get the Ibook App then any documents you open will have a small box on the top right corner, if you check on the box the Ibook link will be there, if you check on it the document that you have open will be transformed to your Ibook, then you can open it anytime online or offline and then you can print it or e-mail it to anyone

hope this will help

No No No!!! There is no pdf available when doing a web-check-in with the virginaustralia.com website. You only get a print button (and no way to save it at all) and if you click it there's no going back and no way to ever re-print your boarding pass. Just like many others in this topic you have failed to read my post and have this idea stuck in your head that I'm trying to print a PDF - I'm not, I'm trying to print TO a PDF.

For any others that are following this frustrating conversation I started a new topic exactly because of this confusion. The answers are there although it appears that Apple has actively prevented virtual print to pdf drivers in ios 5. The app Print2PDF does have a work-around but I have not yet tried it myself.

You need 2 apps one is Dropbox and the second is Ibook

Drag and drop you PDF file to the drop box in your compute

then go to your Ipad and open the file that is now in your dropbox

on the top right corner you will see a small box

open it and you see the Ibook option

select Ibook and your file will be saved in your Ibook to use any time off line

thank you
