Saving PDFs on iPad

Molks- rip much hair out? I can't believe how hard it has been for folks to understand the concept that you want to create a PDF not work with an existing one. Do people not read what they are commenting on?

Hi bitman thanks for your reply Yep just about bald after the experience with so many people who can't read or understand what I thought was a pretty clearly explained issue! I'll check out the PDF Printer app and see what I think. Very timely as I'm leaving for a long holiday overseas and may just need to use it.

I bought the PDF Printer app today and it works. Not completely integrated as you can't simply print to PDF from Safari. You need to copy and past the URL. Other than that it seems pretty nice. Works well with documents and the clipboard.

I am (and have) been looking for the same functionality you are requesting for some weeks. I need the same - a "virtual priinter" creating PDFs. All the "cut and paste" of web-links, conversion of certain documents etc. will not work for e.g. netbank printer (you need to be logged on etc.).

Browsing throught the material I see three options:

1) The work around from Print to PDF

NOTE: your consern of still working in next iOS release

I have not tried it though - but assume it keeps its promise

2) Screenshots (not really an option)

3) Something else ??

Is there a browser out there taking care of the web-need?

Please advice if you have found a solution - I have not!

Writepdf will let you convert a lot of other document formats to Pdf as well as save, store and print

In Safari when a pdf file is displayed a banner will appear briefly across the top of the page with a button "Open in iBooks". Click on this and the pdf is saved in iBooks.

To make the banner reappear touch anywhere within the body of the pdf file.

All you have to do is select the PDF And it will ask you if you want to save it to iBooks. Then it's a document on iBook. I also use dropbox its a free app. And same thing just hold down on the document you want, hit select, And it will give you an option to save it to dropbox. I use dropbox because a lot of my friends have Pcs and it's a lot easier to do it that way. I hope that helps :-)

Once the PDF file is open, click on the share icon on the bottom left and choose to open in Safari. Once the PDF has opened in Safari, you will have an option to open using iBook which will store it on your iOS device. You could also choose to store it on other apps or cloud services of your choice.

THE DAY I GOT MY £399 iPAD when it was launched

It has been my substitute for paper ever since. Any PDF I get from anywhere... website... wiki... my Excel or Word made or edited, which, bless Apple that everything has always been perfect of any size, with Preview! Better that the horrible Abobe software

no Apple's greedy tactics on OS the grind us out of the picture... what do we have to do? Buy a new device every week? Put all the other devices in the bin?

1,000s of PDFs - my work examples for a decade

now they are all destroyed. A handul left. stage 1 of 6 to sync AND backup every micron of data every time!!! I want to pop one little PDF for reading like I used to, or just one little edit of a contact. Now all this time again. So much loss

Yep. I spent all my time re-creating / editing over and again just to replace. Half the time spent on Mac. Then the other 50% nto the pad to choose between versions to delete

wi-fi sync sounded handy but still absolute BACKUP every time, EVERY TIME...

actually, I don't like Time Machine having to do absolute 250GB+ creations every time. This is ridiculous. Need to switch on the option to get it to do differential backups every second? I think 6 monthly at by order should be fine, not spending 3 days to fiddle around with changes

It's funny how so many people have misinterpreted this thread. I too am looking for the same functionality. The closest option I've found so far is using the Chrome browser along with Google Drive. You can choose google drive in the print menu. It saves a PDF of your webpage. I rarely use the chrome browser and by the time I realize I need it, it's too late.

My work around to be able to print PDFs by using the iPad was to use AirPrint feature combined with dropbox.

- Install Handyprint on your Mac. Unfortunately, this mac will need to stay on. I have a mac functioning as a file server so this is fine for me

- Install dropbox

- Install Cups-pdf

- modify default pdf output folder to be in your dropbox

- add cups-pdf to your Mac printer list, enable share

- open Hndyprint and verify its on the list for airprining

Done

On iPad you can choose this printer and get a pdf in your dropbox. You can print from any iOS application that supports airprinting. Downside is that you can only print pdf while you're on your network.
