I just sync'd the movies in my itunes with the ipad and now whenever I tried to open the movies app, the screen will go black as if trying to load the app and then drop back to the home screen after a couple of seconds. I removed all videos and tried it again with the same result. It appears that the app has become completely broken.
I encoded a copy of a movie to a M4V file, synced it via iTunes and it plays fine. Check the format of the video. You may be trying to play an incompatible format. Check the file type requirements for the iPad video player.
yes this happens on my ipad 32GB as well, but on the ipod application. opens briefly then crashes every time, restarted several times, removed all music all videos and all podcasts. still crashes.
would not like to go the restore route as it took 8 hours to optimize photos...
This happened to me with the iPod, photo, and movie app after my original first sync (all caused a crash when I opened them). I thought maybe something was corrupted in that massive sync so I decided to sync one thing at a time. I started with apps, then moved to music (small amount first), then moved to movies and photos. With each small load I checked each app before loading more. Maybe overkill but worked. Maybe there is a problem when you select sync everything?.. Hope this helps and good luck.
fixed without a restore... but dont know exactly how.
what was done
1) i had removed all music/videos/podcasts so nothing showed up in ipod application - still crashes every time (had done several device restarts to see if helped already)
2) i opened up the video application and that was ok - did not crash but of course nothing there
3) i downloaded a free podcast video on the ipad
4) opened the video in the video application - not the ipod
5) tried opening the ipod app and it worked - i could see my one file and play from there too...
6) resynced with itunes for just my podcasts and they now work
Just had this happen last night. Wound up doing a factory restore then adding the music, video then apps. For each type I checked to see if the Video/iPod feature was working before adding the next type of media. A total PITA but it worked and all is well now.
I'm getting the same crash in the iPod application. Tried reset. Tried removing music and reset. Tried adding music back, and reset. Nothing helped. iPod app still crashes after starting to open a window.
I synced a few of my videos, which ran just fine. Then I tried downloading two movies (one HD, one SD) from the iTunes app store (via the iPad), and now the Video and iPod apps crash every time.
Tried resyncing, restarting, etc. This is a big problem.
I've had it happen in YouTube and the Video app, not reproducible exactly. I've had it happen in AirVideo - this is reproducible. But it's not an Apple app! I'm afraid if I go to Apple with the one example I can show them repeatedly, they'll just say it's the apps fault.
Is it possible a handful of iPads (as it doesn't seem to be a widespread complaint) have bad video chips?
All the crashes are the same - rainbow flecks dancing, nothing fix it example a forced shutdown.
I haven't tried a full restore yet, but I may - as it seemed to help you guys out.
Same issue here. Interestingly - it started happening with an old iPad - then I restored from backup to a brand new iPad I received today and the same issue. So yes, the backup was corrupted. This feels like a DRM Apple iTunes Store issue to me.
Has everyone who has experienced this been buying apps/movies/music/shows from more than ONE iTunes account? I regularly use two different iTunes accounts for my purchases and I think the DRM got crossed or corrupted here.
I have a slightly different version of this bug. The iPod App on iPad used to crash everytime I opened it. After reading this thread, I tried the Video app which worked fine. On returning to the iPod App right after the Video, that works fine too. However, it only works in that sequence. Open Video/Close Video/Open iPod. Very strange behavior.
iPad Videos App AND iPod App both crashing on launch every time, even after deleting all the videos in iTunes and syncing.
Started happening when it got confused about some iTunes U videos, first they showed up under movies then under videos (or something like that).
Restarted, deleted all iTunesU content, looking like a restore which is a bummer because it says some purchased content has not be transferred to my Mac via iTunes, thought I've tried the transfer purchased content, sync etc. multiple times...
