I personally would not use Inkscape, even though it is usable. I only suggested it amongst dozens of possible solutions because it is free. As with any vector application you will be able to control the color, transparency, stroke and position of the stroke, unlike with Instant Alpha, whilst producing a scalable, small, and sharp graphic.
Pages is a generalist Word Processor/DTP app and does not do everything. It is only sensible to use the best tool for the job at hand.
