Mini Display Port -> HDMI

I have a 13" MacBook Pro 7,1 and have read that the MiniDisplay Port now passes through audio to HDMI adapters.

I'm using a MonoPrice adapter, which claims to pass through audio when it's available, but have not been able to get it work. When I use the adapter video still works, but no additional options surface in the Output Devices section of Sound in System Preferences.

The audio continues to come out of the MacBook Pro, even when in clamshell mode.

Any ideas on how to get this working?

I tried the low price flavor ($5) from amazon with the same results. 1080P on the video, but no sound. I'm wondering if there is some setup in Preferences to make it work. I've ordered the OWC $20 version on spec.

I don't really care if I get the audio to work as I have the HDMI cable into my TV port that includes a 3.5mm audio jack.

I was amazed how good the video is from a steaming source (I watched a baseball game via mlb.com and also a movie via hulu.com).

However, with Apple TV, DTV, Blu-Ray disks and the ability to stream netflix, I doubt I'll be using this feature very often.

Hi! I have bought the Dr. Bott adapter (Dr. Bott Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter II, black model) and have the same issue: brilliant video but no audio. The Dr. Bott helpline told me that it is an issue with their adapter and that I will receive a new model by the end of this month. Let's see whether this will work then...

After going cheap without success in the audio output, I went with this one...

[HDIM|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/CBLMDPHDMI>

It arrived today and works great in both video and audio. One "quirk?" is that I had to go into System Preferences/Sound and then select my HD TV audio. This option was not there with the "low priced spread".

I'm not sure if this is a one time selection or if I have to do it everything I plug my MBP into my Samsung HD TV. However, I think it may be a one time option as I disconnected and the plugged back in with the sound working via my HDMI cable.

DAYTONA, I LOVE YOU MAN!

After wasting time with a "BYTECC" adapter from NEWEGG and another from MONOPRICE, I found this forum and am grateful. Both of these stated that they are 1.1a compliant and support audio, but this is not the case.

Luckily I can confirm after reading DAYTONA'S post on this thread I found the jackpot

http://www.frys.com/product/5964764?site=sr:SEARCH:MAINRSLTPG

The box states: Micro Connectors, Inc. brand

BE WARNED: Fry's carries several types of adapters for this purpose. I found this item in the general "Display Adapter/ USB Cables" aisle and NOT in the MAC aisle. Fry's sells about 4 or 5 different brands of similar products.

Make sure the FRY'S product number is #5964764

After plugging it in, use the Option/Mouse click on your volume icon. You should see a new output option to choose from.

CHEERS!

You are right. Duty is not much. But aside from wanting to support Canadian business, shipping overall a bit cheaper domestically for orders and returns. This type of cable is a crap-shoot; I already tried one from monoprice, and the return shipping is about the same as the price of the item itself.

I will order from the US if there are no other options. Just waiting to hear back from a couple of Canadian ebay sellers who carry this type of adapter.

Cheers

I got mine at the site below. Logon to see your price. Since I didn't know your postal code, I went with one at random and came up with a price of $19 plus $4.80 shipping. I also ordered some garbage from monoprice and others and it's just not worth messing around getting one of the mini to HDMI cables that will work and this one does. Sadly for you, I think the shipping is only $2.49 in the US and no duties.

Now I have to try to return one of these connectors that didn't work and I think I'm probably out the postage both ways.

I've personally tested DTS-HD & TrueHD on the newest MBP 17" via MDP-HDMI Griffin adapter in Windows 7 via boot camp. It's a NO GO... Does not work because the boot camp drivers do not support the onboard graphics which is where the "key chip" resides. In order for the MBP to support DTS-HD & TrueHD one of two things would need to happen...

1) Apple would need to support Blu-Ray playback & support PAVP (Protected Audio Video Path) in OSX
2) Update Boot Camp drivers to recognize & Utilize the onboard graphics.

At this time neither are taking place.

I returned it within the 14 day return period. Shame..
