Mini Display Port -> HDMI

I have a 13" MacBook Pro 7,1 and have read that the MiniDisplay Port now passes through audio to HDMI adapters.

I'm using a MonoPrice adapter, which claims to pass through audio when it's available, but have not been able to get it work. When I use the adapter video still works, but no additional options surface in the Output Devices section of Sound in System Preferences.

The audio continues to come out of the MacBook Pro, even when in clamshell mode.

Any ideas on how to get this working?

Hey dmason,
I asked a pretty similar question that may help answer yours. I posed the question in this forum thread:

Sorry I don't yet understand the terminology, is MacBook Pro 7,1 the very latest April 2010 model? If so you're right, audio should be passing through the MDP.

However, in the above forum thread, the guy who helped me, Travis, *wasn't sure* that even with an adapter like yours (MDP to HDMI) that the audio would be passed through.

I did read that Apple have no intentions yet to make their own MDP to HDMI adapter, all of which means they may still not be supporting the HDMI standard, by disallowing any adapter to carry through the sound to HDMI.

Sorry I can't confirm this for you, hopefully someone here can.

I have the 15" 2.4 GHz i5 MacBook Pro and the MonoPrice adapter (item #5311) and am in the same boat as you, video but no audio. The specs supposedly meet the requirements listed by Apple ( http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3065) but no joy. Video looks fine but no audio and no option to choose the mini displayport in the audio out pref panel.

Anyone find an adapter that works?

I contacted MonoPrice support. I was told to use the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI with USB audio adatper. I had one for my older MacBook Pro and it worked great. I was hoping I could use a single cable, though.

So for now, it looks like the older solution is the better one, at least as far as MonoPrice goes. Hopefully there will be a true Mini DisplayPort -> HDMI adapter I can get.

I have the new MacBook Pro 7,1 Mid 2010 13" Base model. I've been trying to use it with the Monoprice mini displayport to hdmi cable, but it doesn't work as well. I bought my Monoprice cable in July of last year. Has anyone been able to get it to work? Apple's website definitely says the mini displayport can do audio: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3065.

Please help! I'm currently using the mini displayport + toslink + usb to hdmi cable from Monoprice.

Thanks,

If you have a receiver you can use optical audio cable - the MBP supports that.

i hate how apple leaves stuff like this audio out so us people who buy our laptops once every 5 years happen to get unlucky and buy new right before the update........... it just makes me feel like i wasted money and makes getting audio going so much more inconvenient!!

I just got the Griffin version yesterday and it doesn't work either (even though it says it does).

I routed the HDMI cable through the the receiver to the TV. The picture showed up fine but the audio was coming out of the laptop speakers and not the room speakers. I didn't have time to look into the System Preferences, but it sounds like there is nothing there that will help.

I think it is something with the computer that is the problem.

Hi all,

I've got the 17" MBP i7-620M GeForce GT 330M w/8 GB (Mid 2010)

I'm attempting to bitstream Blu-ray HD Audio (DTS-HD & TrueHD) via the MDP-HDMI adapter in Win7 with Boot Camp 3.1. When I plug in the adapter and power on my Denon AVR, the Nvidia HDMI driver kicks in. After configuring the basics, it would appear that the Cirrus logic chip (CS4206a) is controlling the PVAP (Protected Video Audio Path) in Intel's on-board HD Audio. It doesn't seem that the Nvidia driver is able to recognize the PVAP. I modded the latest Nvidia driver 197.16 and successfully installed it along with the latest HD audio driver, however it doesn't make any difference.

Given the HM55 chipset along with the i7-620M with on-board HD Video & Audio the PVAP is incorporated which should allow bitstreamming.

Anyone know the specifics on the audio paths? It would be a shame if Apple hasn't utilized the PVAP properties.

Any ideas out there?
