HELP! "Problem with the driver for Intel 5 Series/3400 series chipset...."

I am using a new i7 MacBook Pro with boot camp running Windows 7 Professional 64bit with 8mb RAM.

When trying to install my new HP8500 Wireless printer I get this error message:
"Problem with the driver for Intel 5 Series/3400 series chipset family USB Universal Host controller - 3B36. Reinstalling the diver might fix this problem"

I have installed the boot camp 3.1 drivers twice and no help. I need help with details as I am no expert!

MacBook Pro i7 15", Windows 7

I have the sam eproblem, but have a work-around. Connect the printer via USB, and let Windows load it's driver. DO NOT load the HP software, it won't work. You'll have the printer working. The go into the printer settings and change the port to TCP/IP using th eIP address of the printer.

At least you'll be able to print.

Called Apple, they said it's a driver problem, but re-loading the Intel chipset drivers didn't help. Called HP as well, they were completely useless.

Yes, this is really an annoying problem. I have a new MacBook Pro i7 (Mid 2010) with Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Both USB Enhanced Host controllers (3B34 and 3B3C) work fine. But these 2 USB Universal Host controllers can't be started:

"Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family USB Universal Host Controller - 3B36"
"Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family USB Universal Host Controller - 3B3B"

The driver version is 9.1.1.1013, 06/04/2009. I've already tried to update the driver using the "Intel INF Update Utility 9.1.1.1025 for Intel® 5, 4, 3, 900 Series Chipsets", which updated the driver to version 9.1.1.1020, 08/20/2009. But still no change: *"This Device Cannot Start (Code 10)"* (device manager).

The Microsoft knowledge base says in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943104/en: "+The Code 10 error pertains mainly to hardware and device driver issues ... Therefore, we recommend that you troubleshoot these issues by focusing on device drivers, on device configuration issues, and on hardware compatibility issues.+"

Well, the hardware seems to be ok, because when I boot to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the USB port works just fine. But in Windows 7 several other USB software does not recognize the existence of an USB port.

*Any help from Apple or Intel is appreciated!*

Thanks!

There's not much discussion going on in this thread. Therefore I wonder, if this is an isolated problem or if there are actually more people out there experiencing this problem.

What I did:

1. ran TechTools Deluxe in Mac OS X. No visible problem here with the USB port.

2. checked the system profiler output. In the "IORegistry" section both devices show up as "pci8086,3b36" and "pci8086,3b3b", both with "CurrentPowerState"=0x0. Does that indicate a problem?

3. installed Windows XP (32-bit) in a 3rd partition additional to Mac OS X and Windows 7 x64. The same problem here - before and after the installation of the BootCamp drivers: "this device cannot start".

The 3rd test indicates that the hardware failure is not related to any specific Windows version. So either this is a general flaw of the modified Intel HM55 Express chipset that Apple built into the new MacBooks or only my machine is defect. I guess I will have to contact the support to find out, what's going on.

The most annoying symptom I encountered was that the system seemed to freeze completely several times, but actually only the keyboard, the trackpad and the mouse lost their connection due to the USB problem, which I found out after connecting remotely during such a system "freeze". This has to resolved!

Does anybody else have a clue?

@The hatter

I assume that the problem is not related not to any specific hardware driver, because I could reproduce the problem on different Windows versions (XP/7, 32/64-bit) before/after BootCamp installation and also with Intel's latest chipset drivers. I believe that there is actually a bug in Apple's modification of Intel's chipset, which would require a firmware upgrade. That would be very unfortunate, because these things take time 😟

In order to promote a solution, I filed a bug report at
http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/

It's still possible for me to use the USB ports to a certain degree (i.e. external media like hard drives or memory sticks), until the system becomes completely unresponsive. By using a remote session I could verify that Windows was still running, but that all USB devices including keyboard, trackpad and mouse lost the connection to the system.

Most deadly (at least on my system) is trying to use an UMTS stick. This will most certainly kill the USB subsystem.

Here’s something I discovered that might help this issue. It appears that the HP driver installation package is using a utility named usbready.exe that is failing a USB check. This program is from 1998! Yikes! So it's probably not able to recognize the new design of the latest Macs. A potential workaround is to eliminate this program by using the following steps:

1) Run the HP installation package executable (i.e. OJP8500vA909 full_12en.exe)
2) When asked to choose the extract directory, make a note of where it is installed. Easiest way would be to tell it to extract to a folder named HP on the Desktop.
3) Navigate to the extracted installation folder (using Desktop\HP in this example)
4) Go to the "Setup" subdirectory (Desktop\HP\Setup)
5) Move, delete or rename the Intel USB System Check utility (usbready.exe)
6) Double click the Setup executable in the main extraction folder (Desktop\HP\Setup.exe)

This should allow the installation to work completely.
I hope this helps.
