iPhone update server could not be contacted, but why ?

Hi!
I'm wondering why iTunes can't seem to contact the iTunes update/restore server. My iPhone needs to be restored and when I try, it extracts the software but it stops when it comes to contact the server, it says it is temporarily unavailable. I tried all Apple solutions on the support page, but I can't understand how can I check what ports are opens and if iTunes uses them or not...
Thanks.

Hi, Need your help,

My Iphone 5 is hang on the apple startup logo n just stayed there, could not do anything.

Then i saw this thread n i followed the steps.

1. I have saved the host file correctly.(# 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com)

2. Connected to Itunes in recovery mode(using the home button in i5 and connecting the usb)

3. In Itunes i press the restore button. It stoped at 14minutes progress and popup came"Passlock is blocking please enter passlock code".

- But here is my problem, my i5 screen is only showing the apple logo, nothing else. What should i do - please help me.

how do you save it?

"I just followed these steps..

Step 1 – Open the Terminal.app

Either by start typing Terminal on the Spotlight, or by going into Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal.

Step 2 – Open the hosts file

Open the hosts by typing on the Terminal that you have just opened:

sudo nano /private/etc/hosts

Type your user password when prompted.

then i scrolled down to the bottom, and where it says :

127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com, I just added a # and a space before it. Then saved it, and it updated without a problem.

Hello sir,

I've got the same problem as yours, error 1638 on my iPod touch iOS 6.1.2. I've tried everything but nothing really works. Should I also restore on some other computer? I'll have to take my .ipsw to my friend's house as he cant download it there (as its a large 800mb file). Also did you try to restore again on your computer after it? Did it work?

Please help me. I'm really troubled.

Thanks in advance. Please Help.

Well, you are not alone 🙂

Same problem I have, but I don't want any TinyUmbrella

or other non-standard workarounds.

Got Iphone 3gs need to update from 3.1 to 5.1.1. -

got stuck after unpacking IPSW ... checking with apple servers ... 3194

No hosts problems, no Jailbreak, nothing non-standard.

And it is the same computer I have updated other 3gs before.

P.S. I updated Itunes - same thing

Looking into update logs, found in

C:\documents and settings\username\Application Data\Itunes\Iphone Update Logs\

I found long text file with

@device software does not support nonce generation@

This explains nothing to me, except that connection

with gs.apple.com was fine, just the reply was bad.

I believe Apple just force people to update to 6.1.3 straight,

in order to decrease the number of Cydia users.

I am not Cydia user, however I would be fine with 5.1.1, which

still has Google Maps (main reason).

Hello Chris!

Oh, thank you very much! I had a strong feeling

I do everything all right, but Appe just force me

to jump to 6.1.3.

Probably, I should try my lack with Tiny Umbrella,

or, accept Apple Maps and do all as Apple asks ...

Need some time to decide, but at least I know exactly

now that everything was fine with IPSW.

Your reply is really appreciated - thanks again (and again : )

You're welcome. Depending on where you are located, maps is not that bad. I've not had any issues with it, but I'm not that far from a metropolitan area in the US. It has always been that when you restore a device, it will update to the latest iOS. There really isn't a way around that, especially one that can be discussed on these forums.
