Dragging multiple items

Simple question, but one that I can't figure out with my lap top.
Dragging with a mouse? That easy.
But where it is on a lap top, I do not know.
How do I highlight multiple items and drag them?
Every time I try, only one thing stays highlighted.
And that's anything where the arrow is.
Thank you,
Mike

You don't mention which model macbook you have so I will assume it's the aluminum unibody one.
Left click - tap the trackpad with one finger
Right click - tap the trackpad with 2 fingers.
Drag - with 1 finger press down on the trackpad and while holding it down with another finger do a dragging/sliding motion across the trackpad.
To highlight multiple items, hold the Command key down while left clicking on them.
Click on the Apple Symbol (top left of your screen) then System Preferences then Trackpad to change the trackpad settings or view tutorials (later models).

I am going to try and simplify this.
I mistakenly sent all my photos to the Trash. That's 12,000 pictures.
Before I can do anything to them, I must remove them from the Trash and take them somewhere.
Where? I don't know. I thought of making a new folder just for the transfer.
The problem is, once I highlight all of them, I have no way of moving them.
Once I click on ANY photo, the highlight on all of them is gone and I am left with only one highlighted.
How do I keep them all highlighted and move them all at once into the new folder?
I need them out of Trash. After that I can mess with them.
I have a Mac Book Pro laptop, with NO mouse.
Thanks,
Mike

First thing is to get them out of the trash before they get accidentally deleted.

1. Create a new folder on your desktop or wherever you want it (post back if you don't know how to do that).

2. Click once on the trash to open it.

3. Click once on one file in the trash, any file.

4. Hold down the Apple (command) key and press the a key once. This will highlight everything in the trash.

5. Click on any one file in the trash and HOLD the click (do not release it).

6. While still holding the click down, drag the arrow/pointer to the new folder you created in the first step.

7. Once the arrow/pointer is over the new folder, release the click and WAIT. It's going to take some time to move all those files. Don't do anything else. Just WAIT.

8. When you see the files have finished transferring from the trash to the new folder, then the next step is to put them where they belong. Post back when you're ready for that; at least they'll be safe retrieved from the trash.

Perhaps try something like this:
Create a new folder on your desktop.
Next click on you Trash can.
That should open a window with all your trash contents.
From the Finder menu at the top of your screen, click on Edit then Select All.
That should highlight everything.
Now place your cursor on any part of the highlighted area and drag (hold down the trackpad with one finger while dragging across it ) to move all to your new folder.

Thanks for the help.
Okay, I have saved them from the Trash.
They are in a new folder. Safe for now.
The only thing I have to do is reorganize them and get the video pieces back to video.
Right now all I get from the video clips is a still picture.
On several I got the video back, but I don't know how I got it to work.
Back it all up tomorrow.

It seems the only thing not working properly are the modified pictures and a few sets here and there.
Got about 80% back and running.

Hi P,

It would be helpful to know what kind of files we're talking about here. Click once on one to highlight it, hold down the Apple key, and press the i key. This will bring up the "Get Info" window. Also, it would be good to know what suffixes follow the file names.

Thank you all for the help.
I went to the Apple store in Glendale, Ca.
They helped me create a new iPhoto and move the saved pics to there, by making a new folder.
The new folder then transfered to the new iPhoto.
They were able to save the modified pics too.
I lost the Slideshow pics, but I can always make new ones.
Not too bad for messing the whole thing up.
Getting a new 1TB Seagate ($99) from Target right now.

Hi Mike,

Glad you got it all sorted out. A suggestion for you regarding the new HD: divide it into at least two partitions using Disk Utility. Use one partition for Time Machine, and the other for a cloning app such as SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner, and clone the internal HD to one partition on the new external at least once a week.
