Dragging multiple items

Simple question, but one that I can't figure out with my lap top.
Dragging with a mouse? That easy.
But where it is on a lap top, I do not know.
How do I highlight multiple items and drag them?
Every time I try, only one thing stays highlighted.
And that's anything where the arrow is.
Thank you,
Mike

tjk, thanks.
Partitioning is a thing I am not familiar with.

Boot MBP.

Connect external HD.

Open Disk Utility.

Select the external HD in the left hand pane.

Click on the Partition tab.

Under Volume Schemes, choose the number of partitions you want and the size you want each to be; you can simply drag the divider between partitions to increase/decrease one and/or another.

Down below that, click on Options.

Select GUID Partition Table.

Click OK.

Click on the Apply button.

Click on the Erase tab.

Click on Format: and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Click on Erase.

Wait for the formatting to finish before quitting Disk Utility.

I can't even get Time Machine to work.
It says "the storage location for the Time Machine backups can't be found."
How does one start with a message like that?

After partitioning/formatting external HD, connect it to the MBP.

Open System Preferences.

Click on Time Machine.

Click on Select Disk.

Click just to the left of "On" to turn TM on if it's not already on.

Click on the disk or partition you want to use.

Click on Use for backup.

Leave external HD connected, and TM will automatically do its thing.
