Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

iPad Just TURNED OFF! won't turn on! Broken!

I was just reading a webpage on my iPad and the screen went black and then the Apple logo came up and then the spinning loading wheel and it just went black...

Nothing after that.

The screen is blank/black/off - can't tell which. Resetting does nothing. Plugging it into the charge does nothing. Plugging it into iTunes does nothing.

I am not in the US so I am pretty annoyed. I have never had an Apple product die on me! I didn't drop it or get it wet or do anything to it... it has been in its case the entire time!

I suppose my only solution is to sit here and wait till its out in the UK so I can get it replaced.

If anyone has any solutions or even better someone from Apple can fix it for me... that would be amazing! Thanks.

this has happened to me on my iphone once and i could not get a response from it at all with trying to charge it, syncing it to Itunes or any of the buttons. i called apple support and the only way to fix this without bringing it in for maintenance if it is fixable is to try the hard reset. to do this you must hold the home button and the lock button at the same time for about 10 seconds. If it does not come back on with the apple logo it takes maintenance at the apple store. if you can get it to restart make sure your running the newest version which is 3.2.2 . hope this helps!!!

My iPad did the same: pressed the "sleep" button and it wouldn't re-awaken only a few moments later--had 97% battery charge.

The suggested solution from an earlier post worked: held the "sleep" and "menu" buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds, and it re-set. Took another minute or so of the "Apple logo" screen for the home screen to finally display. All apps and data were intact.

Has anyone noticed a correlation between suspending a "running" app and the lock-up? I was running the "Touch LCD" app with the "elapsed timer" function active. When using this feature in the past, I could start the timer, place the iPad in "sleep" mode to save battery power, and then awaken it to see the total elapsed time. Probably just a coincidence.

The issue here is whether that app is at all compatible with iOS 4.2, so it may very well not be coincidence.

Interesting. I bought my iPad here in the U.S. on day 1 and had no problems with it until last night. I installed the new OS yesterday morning and was watching an episode of House last night on it (using the Apple video app). After watching the episode I put it into sleep mode, then remembered that I wanted to turn the volume down so news alerts wouldn't wake me up, but it would turn back on at all. I thought maybe it suddenly lost its charge or something but when I plugged it in... nothing at all... no signs that it was even taking a charge. I tried the reset this morning as mentioned above and it came back to life with everything intact. Perhaps the new OS is still a bit buggy.

Wow this just happened to me while I was watching TV. My screen black and would not turn back on, I was really sad and almost started to cry, but when told my husband he told to call Apple, but the my 90 day of telephone tech support was over a few weeks ago, so I went online on my desktop and typed in the search engine "my iPad went black" and I cam to this wonderful forum and found out how to turn it back on by just holding down the sleep and home button at the same time. I am still going into the store tomorrow to see why this happened, maybe it could be something internal.

Some users have reported problems with their iPads after installing the new OS. Many have fixed those problems by doing a restore to factory settings with the iPad hooked up to their computer in iTunes. It's a bit of a pain as you have to reload all of your apps, music, movies, etc. But this method has fixed a host of reported problems. Probably because this ensures a fresh uncorrupted install of the new OS onto you iPad.

Omg, thank god for this thread. I'm currently on vacation and have saved 2 weeks of photos and videos on my iPad (I relied on my iPad to save my media and deleted the originals from the camera SD card to free up space) so holding the home key plus the lock key for 30 seconds worked for me. Much appreciated guys...

Mine just did the same exact thingUser uploaded file I am ticked off. I bought mine at Best Buy and their "geek squad" said to reset it through itunes on my computer that i originally set it up on. And if that didnt work for you who's to say that is going to work for me? Ahhh this is so irritating. I have only had mine for 48 hours and its already screwing up.... I think i want my money back!
