2.4GHz Core i5 - Frequent hangs in multiple apps, no console message

So, here's what I'm experiencing. It's pretty easy to describe because I haven't been able to find any common element, which is why I am here.

These are *the facts*:

~ (added) I forgot the most important part! My old C2D was working flawlessly, and there's nothing on this new laptop that wasn't on my C2D, except the security update that was released a short while ago.

~ I get fairly frequent beach balls, in multiple applications. These far exceed (in both frequency and duration) what would be considered normal, and what was normal on my 2.4GHz C2D.

~ I get fairly frequent system hangs, originating in multiple applications (which usually starts as a beach ball). In this scenario, everything literally stops, excepting my mouse cursor will still move. I have no visual feedback from anything on the screen at all, and the laptop does not appear to accept or queue any keyboard, trackpad or mouse input.

~ I have not seen any consistent console error message associated with this. In fact, oftentimes there are no messages in the last several minutes prior to and following the phenomenon.

~ I freshly installed the machine upon receipt, and later realized that it had actually only performed an archive and install. I have reset the PRAM, performed a disk repair, and ran a full Cocktail. I have also ran Techtool Deluxe and the hardware test, all with no errors. None of these seemed to have any affect at all.

~ I have tried picking and choosing applications to have running, and to have closed. I have tried turning off the hard disk sleep. I have tried turning off the automatic graphics switching. None had any affect.

~ My resource usage when this occurs varies from very little, to very much. CPU and RAM, at the least, don't appear to be related.

Alright. Now that we have the facts out of the way, let's get to some more obscure *observation and speculation*:

~ This seems to occur in greater frequency when: playing World of Warcraft, shortly after waking from sleep, or when performing large file transfers. However, it also occurs when none of the above are true. Could this indicate that it is related to the hard drive?

~ It almost seemed like this was related to specific software, but as I noted above, I've tried every combination of apps imaginable, and the problem persists.

~ I have seen on two occasions, an error message in console that is generated by different applications (notably Safari and Mail), called INSERT-HANG-DETECTED. If I get the error again I'll post it here, but the error is already out of my logs. In any event, it has not occurred with regularity, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

----------

The biggest mystery to me in all this is that console reports nothing when this happens. It seems like something so severe that it causes the entire system to hang would at least generate a message.

I am at my wit's end on troubleshooting this, beyond just taking days or weeks to try to pin down a cause. I just spent an entire day Monday getting this laptop set up, and I am truly loathe to reinstall.. again.

Any help or advice is appreciated, including any assistance with troubleshooting, or anyone who can report the same phenomenon. These new i5 processors are amazingly fast on benchmarks, but may as well be the slowest processors on earth if my computer keeps hanging like this.

Yes, I have the 5400 RPM drive.

This is infuriating =\

The laptop is so incredibly fast.. then it stalls, and stalls, and stalls. And if what a previous poster said, this is not a common issue, so I may not be able to expect a fix from Apple..

Someone else says replacing the hard doesn't work..

And to top things off, I have done every first aid option possible (other than resetting the PMU, which I guess I should do), including reinstalling!

I use my laptop for work -- having my hard drive replaced costs me $100 for a rental, or forces me to take a day off work.

Not a pleasant prospect.

Not something I'd like to do unless it is definitive.

Edit: And I have to go through the entire setup process for my laptop again, it took a full day when I got it. Sorry, if people say Time Machine isn't reliable, I'm wary to do any kind of restore from a 3rd party and have faith that I won't experience problems.

I've only had my i5 MBP a couple of days, but so far I'm disappointed in it. I bought the old MBP a day before the new units were released. At the time I didn't have a clue about the upgrade. As soon as I heard about it, I returned the prior MBP and ordered another one. I did use the old one for about a week before returning it.

As far as I can tell, the old MBP was faster and smoother and I wish I had kept it now. My big problem with the new book is mainly when typing, there is a noticeable lag between hitting a key and when it appears on the screen. And in general, it's just not as poppy as the previous unit.

I hooked it up to my external HD for a Time Machine backup and even there, it just doesn't seem to run very well. And when it goes into the screen saver mode while on the Time Machine, sometimes the screen breaks up in a very broken pixillation that doesn't pop backup for several seconds.

Overall, I'm extremely disappointed in the computer so far. The typing delay is driving me nuts.

I"m wondering how Apple can release this kind of garbage for sale to the public?

I'm also getting frequent hangs. First I thought it was because of the migration, so I created a brand new user account, and it seemed to get better. But it's happening again.

I've also had two complete freezes where I can't get an interrupt in the kernel at all. For example, the caps-lock key does not switch on or off.

I'm starting to get a little worried.

If the only backup you have is on the Time Machine, I guess you're stuck. I transferred all my files and 3rd party programs with Migration Assistant via ethernet AND with the AirPort turned off on both computers. With AirPort on, it said the transfer would take 24 hours. Turning them off, it only took slightly less than 2 hours to transfer about 110GB. For some reason, the new MBP that I have tries to use AirPort even with an ethernet cable hooked up.

No it's not a Graphic switch issue.
I've worked with Geforce only, (no automatic swicth) and it stalls and hangs frequently too.

I definitly think this is a HDD issue.

I've cloned my HDD with CCC on an external firewire HDD. I've booted with it, then unmount my internal Mackintosh HD. NO MORE HANG when the system is booted from external HDD.

This is a Seagate HDD problem. Hardware (failure ?) or software (bad drivers ?) but it's a HDD problem.

I'm going to have it replaced with a different brand & model, and I will let you know ...

My negotiated link speed is 1.5 gigabit for my 5400 RPM 320GB drive.

I have all my files backed up using methods other than Time Machine -- the key issue here is I really don't want to have to re-setup my entire laptop on a new hard drive (AND either pay for a hard drive, give up my laptop for a period and have to get a rental, or give up my laptop entirely for any period of time), because it interferes with either my money, or my work!

If someone posts here that they have had positive experience changing the HDD, I might consider it.

Finally, I have already tried eliminating graphics switching.. fairly certain I put that in my original post.

Edit: I've created quite a beast here, haven't I? None-the-less, please try to keep the conversation restricted to the matter at hand (hard drive stalling). If you have another issue, or just want to complain, please start a separate thread. This one will be most useful to other people experiencing the same issue, if it is not cluttered.

I am experiencing this issue as well, I ran all the test mentioned above and nothing apparently is wrong. Has anyone noticed a lag in the Boot time of their machine? Mine out of the box was getting on average 35 seconds from the power button being pushed to my home screen showing up - my almost 3 year old MBP Core2Duo is getting close to that. Just wondering if anyone else is noticing this and if this would support the faulty HDD theory.
