2.4GHz Core i5 - Frequent hangs in multiple apps, no console message

So, here's what I'm experiencing. It's pretty easy to describe because I haven't been able to find any common element, which is why I am here.

These are *the facts*:

~ (added) I forgot the most important part! My old C2D was working flawlessly, and there's nothing on this new laptop that wasn't on my C2D, except the security update that was released a short while ago.

~ I get fairly frequent beach balls, in multiple applications. These far exceed (in both frequency and duration) what would be considered normal, and what was normal on my 2.4GHz C2D.

~ I get fairly frequent system hangs, originating in multiple applications (which usually starts as a beach ball). In this scenario, everything literally stops, excepting my mouse cursor will still move. I have no visual feedback from anything on the screen at all, and the laptop does not appear to accept or queue any keyboard, trackpad or mouse input.

~ I have not seen any consistent console error message associated with this. In fact, oftentimes there are no messages in the last several minutes prior to and following the phenomenon.

~ I freshly installed the machine upon receipt, and later realized that it had actually only performed an archive and install. I have reset the PRAM, performed a disk repair, and ran a full Cocktail. I have also ran Techtool Deluxe and the hardware test, all with no errors. None of these seemed to have any affect at all.

~ I have tried picking and choosing applications to have running, and to have closed. I have tried turning off the hard disk sleep. I have tried turning off the automatic graphics switching. None had any affect.

~ My resource usage when this occurs varies from very little, to very much. CPU and RAM, at the least, don't appear to be related.

Alright. Now that we have the facts out of the way, let's get to some more obscure *observation and speculation*:

~ This seems to occur in greater frequency when: playing World of Warcraft, shortly after waking from sleep, or when performing large file transfers. However, it also occurs when none of the above are true. Could this indicate that it is related to the hard drive?

~ It almost seemed like this was related to specific software, but as I noted above, I've tried every combination of apps imaginable, and the problem persists.

~ I have seen on two occasions, an error message in console that is generated by different applications (notably Safari and Mail), called INSERT-HANG-DETECTED. If I get the error again I'll post it here, but the error is already out of my logs. In any event, it has not occurred with regularity, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

----------

The biggest mystery to me in all this is that console reports nothing when this happens. It seems like something so severe that it causes the entire system to hang would at least generate a message.

I am at my wit's end on troubleshooting this, beyond just taking days or weeks to try to pin down a cause. I just spent an entire day Monday getting this laptop set up, and I am truly loathe to reinstall.. again.

Any help or advice is appreciated, including any assistance with troubleshooting, or anyone who can report the same phenomenon. These new i5 processors are amazingly fast on benchmarks, but may as well be the slowest processors on earth if my computer keeps hanging like this.

Okay, I'm onboard with this being a hard drive issue. That makes sense. I had one more hang with console, and activity monitor open, and I'm fairly sure this was related to the HD and not the cpu.

I have to say , this kind of *****. I really don't want to rebuild everything either. Time for superduper.

I do have one hope, which is, right as this event happened, I had dozens and dozens of quicktime errors in console related to divx:
4/24/10 9:50:15 PM [0x0-0xf20f2].com.google.Chrome[1765] /Library/QuickTime/DivX Decoder.component/Contents/MacOS/DivX Decoder: open() failed with errno=1
I've re-installed the divx component, and the errors stopped. No hangs yet... but I'm sure it will happen again.. so we'll see.

I wonder if Apple support will take action without witnessing the hang themselves.

I have this same problem. I also have the standard 320 GB 5400 RPM drive. I'll also note it seems to get better throughout the day as I use the computer. It's worst after I first wake it from sleep or boot it up for the first time. My guess is that more things are loaded into RAM the more I use it, so the HD isn't accessed as much.

Please let us know what you experience swapping your HDD!

I've added disk activity monitoring to my iStat Menus in the hopes that I might observe something useful during one of the hangs.

I have also submitted the following bug report to Apple:

Summary:

The HDD will become unresponsive for 10-40 seconds, during which time applications, or the majority of the OS, will hang / beach ball. The mouse will still move, and sometimes my iStat Menus will continue to show (virtually nil) CPU usage. This always recovers, but it occurs frequently. No console messages are generated when this occurs. I have the factory 5400RPM 320GB drive.

Steps to Reproduduce:

This occurs primarily whenever large disk operations are taking place, and/or:

- Moving large amounts of files from or to another disk
- Switching between applications when there is little free memory (but plenty of inactive)
- Waking the laptop from sleep (not immediately, but several times following the wake up)
- Playing World of Warcraft

Expected Results:

The laptop should not experience frequent 10-40 second stalls, due to the hard drive being apparently unavailable.

Actual Results:

Frequent 10-40 second hangs / stalls occur, during which time the OS becomes almost completely unresponsive.

Regression:

I have attempted the following without being able to eliminate the issue.

- Reinstalling the OS (archive and install)
- Selectively closing applications
- Resetting the PRAM
- Running UNIX maintenance tasks
- Running disk repair (from install disk)
- Running permissions repair

Personally, if it boils down to it, I am going to replace the hard drive myself.

I don't want:
1) To lose my laptop while they replace the hard drive.
2) To be unable to do a direct clone from my computer.
3) To have the same model HDD in my machine that is causing the problems.

Assuming it is, in fact, solvable by replacing the HDD.

I Have the same problem as iRuney, I will replace it myself, it's fast, easy and even described in the user manual !!! (I will restore my data from the Clone I made 2 days ago.)

If it's not the cause of the problem ... then I will have it repared by Apple. (the only option, if it's not an HDD problem, is that it's a SATA controler problem ... that means motherboard replacement ...)
