Dead pixels? Anyone?

I just got my iPad a few days ago and love it a great deal.

However last night I noticed a single dead (black) pixel near the center of the screen.

Is this unusual? Should I take it an apple store and get it replaced or just learn to live with it?

I appreciate the feedback!

Dead pixels are a common problem on a variety of screens. However, on an iPad which is quite literally nothing but a screen its even more annoying. I'd say you should take it back since the dead pixel is right in the middle. Ipads are expensive and there's no reason to live with a glaring defect like that. I've yet to see a display model in an Apple store with a dead pixel or anything less than perfect.

I think the best way to identify a dead pixel is to open up an app I have called "Draw". It's a basic drawing app, probably any of them would work. The idea is that it's got a purely white background.

If you think you've identified a dead pixel, draw over the pixel with a blue brush, see if the pixel remains black and you can see it through the blue. It's hard to describe, but a dead pixel will be black against the white background, and then black also after you color over it with a different color.

On my iPad the Apple store was able to identify a number of dead pixels and also an imperfection in the glass. The imperfection in the glass was different in that it looked like a dead pixel, but when you changed the viewing angle it would appear to float on top of the actual screen.

They replaced mine because of the amount of dead pixels and imperfections, but they explained that a certain amount of dead pixels is technically acceptable. I believe he said up to 3 is technically 'okay', by their standards.

I wouldn't find it acceptable as "One" or "3" pixels in the terms of a 30,60,90 day money back warranty deal. It's a brand new just released product. Not even 30 days from retail/FedEx and it's already got dead pixels. People like me would be furiated that I haven't done anything to the iPad as far as dropping it on the ground or wetting it, maybe overcharge it, and pixels are dying.

1st Ipad - 1 large black dirt speck "floating" in the glass
2nd Ipad - 2 dead pixels and six specs of dust under the glass creating rainbow effect.

The 2nd Ipad was a replacement from Apple Care for the 1st Ipad with the bad screen. The 2nd is far worse than the 1st. I would really like to have the Ipad for my photography business, however, I am frustrated with the display problems from the apparent lack of quality control. I am not sure that I will keep the Ipad at all if the 3rd has display defects. I might have to stick with my laptop. Oh well.

Anyone know how many times Apple will replace something before they final cry uncle?

I have multiple iPads and they all have at least some dust under the screen. Luckily the dust is only visible at certain angles under bright and direct light as well as under sunlight. There's also a fleck of dust under the glass on my MacBook Pro. I think it's pretty safe to say that there's no way around the dust issue but luckily you really have to be scrutinizing the screen to ever notice it. As for dead or stuck pixels, I haven't found any on the iPad or my MacBook Pro or my 3GS. It's safe to say that they have the pixel issues squared away for Apple devices.

The way around dust is to use this new-fangled idea called a "clean room". Sarcasm aside, this is not a new concept to panel manufacturers, I think that the supplier to Apple is taking shortcuts to the detriment of Apple. Whether this is due to poor Apple QC policies or a supplier trying to push bad product through, it is not good PR for Apple, which has a heavy user base of graphics professionals that have acute vision.

As for the dead pixels, I wouldn't say that they have got it sorted out since there are several posts and complaints since Ipad launch (just a couple of weeks ago mind you) that highlight the problem.

My advice to Apple is to quickly get the bottom of the problem and get their quality back up to snuff.
