iPad Camera Connection Kit: Raw Image and Flip Video

Hi
Now that the connection kit is shipping, perhaps someone can answer these questions. I want to use the iPad as a storage device for photos and (Flip) video when I travel to avoid carrying a laptop.

1) Can you view a raw image on the iPad that doesn't have a JPEG image paired with the raw image?

2) Can you then retrieve the raw image and copy to a computer in its original form?

3) Can you import, then retrieve Flip video files and copy to a computer in its original form?

Any other comments how useful the iPad will be for this purpose?

Thanks!

Dave

I can answer the first one as I downloaded NEF (Nikon Raw) files this evening and they showed up fine on the iPad.

I am interested in the second question as well.

Max, I just imported two raw files from my 5DII via a direct connection to the iPad USB camera connector kit and then downloaded them to my computer using Aperture. No problems. File sizes were around 26 megabytes each in the exported versions.

What I would like to see a way to export these raw photos from the ipad to a SD card via the iPad SD card reader so I can archive the photos to something other than my iPad (which is 32 gigs.).

I was able to get my ipad to work with my USB Compact Flash reader. This way I can transfer my images from my Nikon D300 RAW/JPG, no issues viewing on the ipad.

I was also able to get the ipad camera connection USB kit to work with SD card and downloading both JPG and 720p AVCHD lite video .MOV files from my Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS. The 720p video plays on the ipad perfectly and I was able to edit just fine.

I was able to play videos from my Flip Mino HD without any conversion on my iPad by sending them to the iPad via GoodReader or Dropbox. The videos played in those two applications just fine.

So why can't I play them in Apple's "Videos" application?

Ultimately I'd like to send them to ReelDirector for editing on the iPad, but that won't work either.

So my question is - if GoodReader and Dropbox can play them, why can't Videos or ReelDirector?

I have had no problems importing nef files from the iPad to my MBP via iTunes, what I have found important is how you proceed in iTunes. If ( in my case ) I just click on the preview image Photoshop will open an approx 3 Mb jpeg version, to sort this I went to iTunes preferences, under the general tab I inserted Photoshop ( or your choice of editing package ) in the edit photo box, under the advanced tab I have all the boxes ticked so a raw file will open.
Returning to iTunes I highlight the required image, click the pencil edit icon on the bottom toolbar and my image opens in ACR at approx 15mb.

I also have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS. However, only photo files appear on the import list of the iPad when I plug in the Apple Camera Connector with the Camera's SD Card.
Does anyone have any suggestions why the video files do not appear given that it works for others with videos taken on a card with the same camera?

Thank you for your reply. I have a Lumix DMC-ZS3. Videos have been taken with an automatic setting. The file type produced is an AVCHD file. My subsequent reading suggests that AVCHD files are not compatible with the iPad and need to be converted before being able to be transferred to the iPad. I presume this means that the previous comments that the files were being read by the iPad suggests that those files were from a different model DMC-ZS which did not use the AVCHD file format. I would be interested if there is some other explantion (or ideally a solution) to be able to transfer these viseo files to the iPad (with out having to go via a computer to 'convert').

For ZS3 MTS files, all you need to do is remuxing (NOT recompressing!) the files with iVI. Nothing else needs to be done. Then, iTunes will be able to synch them as Photos.

Here's an article on remuxing MTS files; make sure you follow the iVI link at the bottom: http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/playing-back-1080p60i60p-non-mov-videos-right- your-camera
