cheers
I believe the 6ixpassion post helped a lot of people, but we should not be expected to modify our own machines, and Apple should not tell me it is normal behavior.
I took my 15" in today and genius is going to do a GR stress test. I don't particularly care much for the idea that I have only owned my macbook for 5 months and already it is being taken apart!!! I also was told most likely this sound is normal hard drive/ moving parts sound. I advised genius that I did not hear this sound for the first two months and that one evening while using the laptop it seemed much warmer than usual so I shut down; few days later I got clicking. If the sound was normal I think I would have heard it during the first couple of months of ownership. It's actually pretty annoying. I think it is terrible if you have to go in and dissect your new mac and treat it like a science project to have it work accordingly. That's the sole responsibility of the manufactor. Another gripe: I've used alot of laptops in my day and all of them also have moving parts and hard drives and I never heard a noise like this to even compare! : (
I have had the same problem. I brought my mac yesterday and didnt dare put it anywhere other than a table for fear of dropping it. I have had it on my lap today and it has been making the same clicking noise. All good tho. I assumed it was something to do with protecting the hard drive or something. I bloody hope so anyway!
My brand new 15" MBP (sandy bridge quad core i7 delivered at the end of July 2011) with an after-market Intel SSD has this issue as well. Per the earlier instructions I yanked the cover, removed the grounding clip/spring/whatever, and tadah! No more noise. Granted, removing something from my fantastic new machine and not putting it back in has me slightly nervous, but it seems like there's some safety margin with the grounding. Fingers crossed... 😉
This is the second disappointment I got from my macbookpro, the first one is the issue regarding the automatic graphic switching, and now this.
I just noticed two weeks ago for my 3 months old macbookpro 17inches.
This is is making me dislike apple product
are you talking about the little black bar directly above the triangle? and are you tightening or loosening the screws to alleviate the clicking sound? i got a bit confused the more i read through the thread
Any word from Apple or Genius if removing the grounding bar is effective, and more imporantly safe? I'm waiting for the all clear before ripping this thing out; the "plinks" are driving me nuts.
i took it outta my roommates laptop and the noises stopped, if u look when u take the back plate out theres about 20 other grounding 'pins' so i dont see there being a problem from removing one of them.
I have this problem in my early 2011 MBP.
I'm assuming I have the same problem as this obviously isn't a rare thing.
Has anybody had problems since / problems after removing / putting tape on the grounding pin?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
I've had no problems after removing the noisy grounding pin. This post was typed on the machine, in fact. 🙂
Suddenly suffering from this as well.
Read this article and made total sense.

I have this same issue, it's just started on my "17 inch - Late 2011 Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7"
It's only just started, about 6 months after purchase. Really bugging the **** outta me!
I'm based in New Zealand and might have to show this post to an authorized repair agent to get them to fix it.
I fixed this issue VERY simply. Unscrewed the bottom panel, re-aligned it properly and then screwed it back together firmly, and the noise disappeared. worth giving this a try. i found when undoing the bottom panel that the screws were abit loose and it wasnt aligned properly. as soon as i took it off and repositioned and clicked it into its proper place, the noise hasnt come back ever since.
hope it helps someone else. if it doesnt, sorry...

2 weeks ago I bought a mid-2012 MBP 15" and it started having this problem in the last few days after a lot of travel. Went to Genius Bar today with this site and others to show the tech. He looked in the Apple "Knowledge Base" where it said, hilariously, that this tinging is not a problem -- meaning it doesn't affect the machine function. Of course it's a problem for me! And the advice they are given is that "repair/replace will NOT solve problem." The tech -- er, GENIUS -- glanced over the websites and said, rather defensively, that he couldn't "go off" of them. I assured him that it was fine if he didn't use those methods but that he might rely on the experiences recounted there.
He came back a bit later and said he had installed a little piece of tape to dampen the tinging. It doesn't ting anymore. Hooray!
