MacBook Pro (April 2009) Mini Displayport to HDMI convertor (no audio)

Hi all,

I purchased this MacBook Pro 15" last week, it's one of the new core i7 ones. This is my first mac and so far I am pretty pleased.

Anyways, I purchased a Mini Display Port (Male) to HDMI (Female) Convertor from NCIX (link: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=41249&vpn=Y-5119HF&manufacture=Unitek). When hook up the adapter between my Mac and TV, I get video out (1080p) but no audio!

Since, I am new to this OS, maybe I missed something in the System Preferences panel? Any help is appreciated, I would love to be able to listen to my music through my home theater system. Thanks!

Moshi Japan has just announced its new Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (with audio). This time its web site states clearly that it supports HDMI audio passthrough(MacBook Pro 13/15/17" mid-2010 release). However Apple Store does not carry this item yet. Have to look elsewhere for testing.
Any one has tried this adaptor already?

Here's the step-by-step instruction to configure video/audio output on
the miniDP port:

1. Install the latest software update for your MacBook Pro or iMac.
2. Connect the HDMI cable (not included) via Moshi's Adapter to your
TV or AV receiver.
3. Turn on your TV or AV receiver.
4. Open "System Preferences" on your Mac, open the "Sound" option in the "Hardware" category.
5. Click on the "Output" tab and change selection from "Internal Speakers Built-in Output" to "Built-in HDMI Output ".
6. Open the "Displays" option in the "Hardware" category to select the appropriate display resolution and arrangement setting.
7. Once configured, you should be able to feed both video and audio streams to your TV or AV receiver.

In the past few weeks, I have tried to source from all the major apple stores in HK but they all have no stock of the new adaptor yet. Today, I manage to find the new Moshi adaptor in Mongkok computer city 318 shop. It costs me around USD30.

I test it right away back home and it works like magic. I am so exicted to watch the youtube HD videos on my HDTV. It's just awesome. Last time, I got some problem displaying the dock of my MBP and this time it displays perfectly and the sound is very good thru my TV.

Grab one fast and you won't regret.

The Apple Store does carry the Moshi MDP-to-HDMI adapter that's supposed to carry audio on the mid-2010 MacBook Pros, but after a week of trying to use it on two different HDTVs with three different HDMI cables have had no luck. Save your money, buy one of the generic $10 HDMI adapters and run audio out of the headphone jack.

I believe you have bought the old Moshi adaptor same as I did earlier which I have returned to the store.

The new Moshi adaptor will have an explicit declaration and not "supposed" function listed on its packaging saying it supports audio passthrough with the MBP 2010. Also, on the smaller end of the HDMI connector it now has an engraved square mark as a distinction from the older models. The new Moshi adaptor is so much better than the old model that I can now use the side HDMI input on my HDTV which has no response with the old model.

Here is a quick reply I received from Moshi about this problem:

"It has recently came to our attention that there might be a bug in the 10.6.4 update that disables the audio output option through HDMI. We've brought this attention to Apple and they're now investigating this matter. Hopefully there will be an update from Apple to fix this issue soon."

I called Apple Technical Support and they confirmed that there is indeed an issue in the 10.6.4 update that disabled the audio output option through HDMI. The Apple customer service rep said that they were aware of the problem, were working to address it but could not give a time frame for its resolution.

Bottom line, anyone on Snow Leopard 10.6.4 will no longer be able to output audio via HDMI until Apple addressed the problem.

I can't speak to the audio problem as my Mini DVI to HDMI does not carry audio. However, as regards the Disabling of the Underscan feature, I can tell you that absolutely is related to the update to 10.6.4. I have had 2 Macbook Pros- both allowed me to use the Underscan feature to fit the picture to My Samsung LED TV. On both of them, however, once I updated to 10.6.4 the Underscan feature was Grayed out. When it happened on the first one I took it back and exchanged it on Apple's recommendation under their assumption there was a problem specific to my Mac. Out of sheer paranoia I waited to today (4 weeks later) to do an OS X update in hopes the problem was specific to the first computer. Unfortunately, the same problem occurred. The Apple Support senior tech said he had never heard of this problem and readily agreed there is no reason the Underscan feature should be grayed out. He is supposed to talk to the engineers and get back to me. In the meantime, I lucked out in that I found a setting under screen size in my Samsung called "Fit to Screen". I set the HDMI output my Apple is hooked up to to this setting and the problem is solved. My Panasonic plasma does not have this setting so it does not solve the problem. It appears to me that the bottom line is this update has taken away the user's ability to adjust the Mac to fit any HDTV, and instead leaves the user at the mercy of the TV,i.e., does the TV have the ability to adjust to the Mac output. It should not be this way.
