CoreAudioToolbox.dll crash on 5.1 sound

Ever since iTunes 9.1 was released I have been unable to enjoy 5.1 surround sound on iTunes. If i am watching something that has a 5.1 stream and select it iTunes crashes. This was never an issue before.

I have my audio going from optical out to my surround sound amp. No changes were made to the software on my machine except updating iTunes.

Ordinarily this wouldn't be too much of a problem but if i select 5.1 for an episode or film and iTunes crashes there is no going back. 5.1 then comes the default for that file and i cant play it.

Has anyone else seen this. I posted on neowin.net and found a few people running windows 7 64bit who have had the problem but i haven't heard much.

I was hoping that the recent update 9.1.1 would fix the problem. Its still the same. Probably because the both use the same version of the "CoreAudioToolbox.dll"

I don't think we will ever see Apple intentionally fix a problem they created. Look at OSX. Earlier versions couldn't support a vast amount of hardware, new versions can't support old hardware. So I doubt they are going to fix this as they are simply not capable. Its amazing Windows XP is still kicking around and working with old and new hardware...

iTunes is a bloated piece of $&!#. I am only stuck with it until I switch to an Android phone or Windows based one.

I may have found the solution to this one. At least it worked for me.
After trying to uninstall and then reinstall iTunes many times with no luck, including going back to earlier versions, e.g. 9.0, I noticed that the Apple Applications Support files were not getting changed each time I updated iTunes. These are located in the c:\Program Files\Commmon\Apple folder for a typical Windows 7 installation.
This time around, when I uninstalled iTunes, I also uninstalled Apple Application Support, via the Windows COntrol Panel. Then, when I reinstalled iTunes, it also reinstalled the Application Support Files, including a different version of the CoreAudioToolbox.dll that has been causing all the problems. Now I am able to open iTunes (9.2.0) with no errors.
Based on this experience, my theory is that a different version of CoreAudioToolbox is required for some, if not all, new iTunes versions. If this is the case, then Apple should have got the iTunes installer to check for compatibility on each upgrade, and if necessary reinstalled Application Support to ensure the right dll's are in place.
I hope this fixes it for some of you.

I dont think your issue is quite the same - the problem is not with starting itunes, the problem is when trying to switch a tv episode to play with surround sound audio. I had high hopes that iTunes 10 would resolve the problem - but it has not. The behavior is slightly different with iTunes 10 - instead of crashing when swiching to 5.1 sound, iTunes 10 just hangs the first switch attempt. It does not crash, it allows you to close the episode. If you try to switch again, no hang, but also no sound at all. I tested with 2 different sound cards to be sure - Creative & ASUS Xonar. Playing 5.1 surround sound on windows 7 64bit must not be in Apple's QA departments test suite.
