I have the same problem on iPad and iPhone. When i open mail and connect to POP account, it crashes. I can see mail for a few seconds - there are emails in there from one month ago. Even after i've cleared all emails via webmail, reset my devices, deleted and re added the accounts. Both devices seem to have remembered the old emails - any idea how I can solve this?!

Same problem, Have reset and restored ipad to default setting and then manually add email account again and same problem, the mail app opens for 5 seconds then crashes.
ISP email is www.Internode.on.net
Ipad now useless for email, Will have to shelved ipad until bug fix.
I found deleting any undeliverable mail receipts resolved the issue for me. Mail had been working fine on the IPAD/IPHONE and issues started after I recieved an undeliverable email receipt. So I deleted it and seems to be ok so far.
This problem seems to be coming from undeliverable mail. It's setting up a loop between your server and your device. Bouncing emails can also cause this it seems.
Clear all the suspect mail on your computer first. Then go to your server account and clear any mail being held.
Then do a full reset of your Ipad/Ipod and this should clear up the problem
My problem is a bit different.
I receive an email that is quite large in size, when ever I try to open it, delete it or move it it locks my iPad and I can't do anything. I then have to wait for the battery to go flat so it turns off, then turn it back on, and the one email is always there,
For the moment I'm just going to leave it until i can find a solution.
This Is not a solution for this problem ... It's just a temporary fix, and a short-lived one. I'm getting angry and frustrated. Everything I've tried hasn't worked. If Apple has a solution, please let us know about it. Otherwise give us a phone number to call.
I've found something that seems to cause Mail on the iPad a fair amount of trouble...
My dad has been using his iPad for a month without problems, but over the last few days, Mail has started crashing back to the desktop. It all started happening when he tried to send some photos from the Photos app via email. He clicks on the Forward button, selects the photos, then via email. The emaiI opens up and he adds the recipient and presses send. It takes ages for the mail to send, but we've confirmed that the recipient eventually gets the mail. The next time he tries to access mail, it crashes to the desktop.
I removed his email accounts (POP) and added them back. It worked for a couple of days, then somebody else tried to mail some photos the same way. BAM! Same problem. Crashes to the desktop.
I removed the accounts and added them back as IMAP. Got it all working then just tried to send a photo in the same way. The email sends, but stays in the Outbox. I can't access any of his mailboxes, so nuked them all again and added them back. It's working now, but I'm pretty sure that sending photos via the Photos app on the iPad kills Mail every time. I'm taking it to the Genius bar on Saturday do see if they have any ideas.
We just got our iPad yesterday. I setup for POP account and everything worked fine via home Wifi.
Today we tested attachments - when we opened an Excel attachment it opened viewing only and now Mail is stuck on "cannot send Email" message. We cannot break out of the send mail loop and cannot get back to Email from the Excel view.
The only mail item we have sent this morning is a photo from the Doodle Buddy app.
Not sure which variable is causing iPad mail to be stuck, the Excel or the Doodle Buddy send photo.
Even when we turn off the mail account and with no mail setup the send loop continues. Which is kinda bizarre to a PC guy.
I am going to try changing over to IMAP (which is suboptimal) but the key question I have is how to clear the send mail from the iPad?
I went into the trash bin of my ISP's mail site, looked over each email very carefully and found one offending (undeliverable) email, deleted it and started everything up again. To my delight, it worked, and is still working today, more than a day later.
So my suggestion to you if you're having this problem, look very carefully for a rogue email or two. They're in there somewhere, and they don't "play nice".
I believe that we are figuring out the problem and as stated above, the mail app crashes seem to be tied to undeliverable mail in the main account.
Symptom: mail app would crash consistently after running for about 5-10 seconds. Mail app is setup with a gmail IMAP account.
*Here is how I fixed the mail app crash:*
Logged directly into gmail.com and did a search for "undeliverable"
Serch found one recent email that I had sent out that was deemed undeleverable.
I deleted the email and confirmed deletion by doing one more search for "undeliverable" directly in gmail.com - there were no longer any more results.
Check my iPad mail app and it is running fine now.
Interesting issue, I dont have this problem with my iMac, Macbook pro and iPhone (ios4 on a 3GS). All of them are using the same IMAP gmail account and apple's mail client.
Setting up Mail with my ISP did not seem to work. Eventually, I copied the settings from my Touch and let the "Verifying" spin for about 4 minutes. I then replied "Yes" to the question "Would I like to use Mail without SSL". I waited another 2 minutes and all worked.
Then I went into settings and in the Advanced setup, I turned on SSL. From this discussion, I saw it mentioned. Mail then began to crash after a few seconds. I turned off SSL, still crashed.
Deleting the account(s), starting again, waiting for the same 4 minutes, then 2 minutes got me back to a working Mail program.
I do not know if this is a Mail problem or my ISP. The same setup gave me no problem on my iPod Touch. Hope this helped
