Apple Wireless Keyboard won't pair with iPad 3G. Turned on keyboard before turning on iPad. Then turned bluetooth on. Keyboard works with iMac.

IPAD WI-FI + 3G 64G-USA, Mac OS X (10.5.5), OS iPhone 3.2

Is this the white bluetooth Apple keyboard or the aluminum one? The white one won't pair. The aluminum one needs to be put in discovery mode so the iPad can find it.

My husband had the same problem. He updated the firmware and held the power button of the keyboard until it showed up on the iPad.(3G-64gig). Works now. The keyboard is an A1314 with aluminum keys.

What do you mean he updated the firmware? I just got mine delivered from China. I would hope I wouldn't need to update anything at this point but just in case... how do you update the firmware?

Apple sends out periodic firmware updates on your PC/Mac. It's been quite some time since there has been any keyboard updates.

Pardon my ignorance, as I am new to the wireless keyboard. Is the update synced with the keyboard via bluetooth or do you connect it somehow? Is their a way to tell what firmware my keyboard is as I only want to use this with my iPad. I don't have a Mac/PC to sync it with.

    Thanks.

Since the iPad is brand new, no one here would know how keyboard updates are handled on the rare occasion that keyboards get updated.

I was stymied, but here goes.
    1. Turn on the iPad's Bluetooth setting from the Settings menu.
    2. Turn on your keyboard. If you've given it a name, it should show up and say "Not Paired."
    3. Here's the step I could not figure out: Select your keyboard by tapping on the iPad's screen where the name appears.
    4. It will then give you the code prompt to type in some numbers and pair the two.

    Good luck.

I think you meant this for the OP.

Finally got home to try out my new keyboard. Absolutely no problem pairing it up. Took about 1 minute to accomplish. Typing this on the keyboard. SLICK!

Thanks much. I had beaten my head against a wall on this. First, I had no luck until turning my iMac off. I believe that the keyboard was still listening to the iMac's Bluetoth, despite my having disconnected it using the iMac's Bluetooth menu. I say that because, after disconnecting and trying unsuccessfully to link to the iPad, I went back to the room with the iMac. The Bluetooth menu treated the keyboard as connected again. I suspect that there is some setting to reconnect automatically. Anyway, I disconnected the keyboard again and then turned off the iMac. Now I got to step 2 in your experience below, but would not have gotten beyond it without your tip in step 3. Thanks.

Actually, there was a keyboard update about two months ago and another one about four months ago.

The one four months ago was eating batteries all the time.

Don't know if you can update the firmware via the ipad, but I would take it to apple and have them fix it.

this is exactly the issue. it took my a while to figure out how to update the keyboard. i paired it with my imac and ran software update. then i downloaded the firmware updater that was listed and followed all of the prompts to update the keyboard. i paired easily with the ipad after that.
    thanks!

Will this work for the white wireless keyboard as well?
    Thanks,
