MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze - Apple Community

Been checking Console and in-particular the kernal.log

The issue seems to be (for me at least) something to do with the *NVDA OpenGL*

*I get a bunch of these, about 20 last time*

This happened twice today, once after coming out of hibernation and again later after sleep for about an hour, plugged in. Both times machine was cool and had news video streaming in Opera. Don't usually use Opera but wanted to see if the problems continued with a browser other than FFox.

I have the same machine and I can say that this is the nest Mac I have ever owned, and I have owned many of them since 2001, desktops and laptops.

Sometimes I restart it because I can't remember the last time it had been restarted.

I don't think it's the hardware in general, but perhaps something with your laptop and/or software. I would remove any of these fan controllers and anything monitoring hardware, as well as take a look at Finder modifying software, plug -ins, etc.

No fan controllers or monitoring apps - that I have added.

It's a good computer, really like it, but the number of freezes is just stupid and at totally random times it seems. Whether it is a coincidence or not it seems that a slight touch to the touch pad often accompanies the freeze but that could just be my imagination.

Being unable to effectively recreate the issues at will is a pain, at least then I could try to avoid it.

Just installed the new update 10.6.7 - hopefully a fix has been added to that but I don't see anything specific.

Let us know how it goes. I haven't had any issues since the techs at the Apple store wiped my drive and installed 10.6.6 for me, but I don't want to upgrade to 10.6.7 if the problem is going to come back.

People may have given up or the update is working for them. I had 1 freeze since the update but also a kernal panic yesterday. Again the freeze came after being asleep, while plugged in.

Booked time at the GeniusBar.. pretty bloody sick of this now.

Hi ragtag -

To avoid unnecessary trips to the Genius Bar, you might consider booting a clean install of OS X (from your machine's original internal drive, if possible). Run Software Update and install the recommended packages, and then (without installing any third party software) try using your MBP and see if the freeze occurs again.

If it does happen under those circumstances, it will likely be much easier for the attendant to find the cause. If you're unable to reproduce the problem, then you've at least narrowed it down to some change made or other software installed upon the base OS.

I know troubleshooting elusive issues can be profoundly frustrating - though it takes time, eliminating variables systematically is still the quickest route to a solution.

So, bottom line is that the problem lies in the logic board in MBP mid 2010. Went to the genius bar, I had to replicate the issue the screen went eventually blank and the system was unresponsive.

Two days later the logic board was replaced and I haven't had any issue since. I also upgraded to 10.6.7... The problem seems to be fixed now.

Is there any chance that they changed my logic board and didn't tell me when they had my laptop for 2 days? When I dropped it off, the girl at the Genius Bar put an order in for a new logic board and said that way they would have it if they needed it. Could they have just felt sorry for me and swapped it out? I figured they'd tell me if they did it...even if it was out of good will.

Hi guys!

Well after i succesfully got my logicboard changed, i now been expirincing some other types of freezes.

I get sort of a pattern across the screen, and I have to hardboot it to get it running. Any one who might know what could be causing this?

Had two frozen screens on 10.6.7 - so there was no change in the update.

Well, with about 24 hours of no errors, i got one again!

Just reading all these post has gotten me sick. I placed a new 13" Mac Book Pro i5 in my apple shopping cart and is now contemplating my next move very cautiously. I need it for playing live with Mainstage 2.
Should I buy or not? Where I am at it would take a while to return if anything goes wrong.
