so anybody has found out how to solve it? in some other pages they stated that turning off automatic graphics switching in the energy safer preference window solved the freezing problems. it is becoming really annoying with almost happening daily and i need each time to hard shut down the mac and start from the recovery disk one to repair the HD. Please advice

I had the same issue with my macbook pro mid 2010. Just check yout kenrel panic report in console, if you see the following in every report, you got yourself a defective logic board. Bring it in to apple, they should take care of it for you.

I have a question about the stuck-at-depot problem? Don't mean to hijack the thread, but by any chance was your MBP in Memphis?

Mine was stuck there for almost 10 days after it was reported repaired. I pitched a fit and demanded they return it to me repaired or not...and magically it was repaired and returned (though with the wrong lower-res display) the next day.

The darn thing is still not repaired (on day 16 of a failing laptop), but at least I know where it is now. (Sitting like a $3000 paperweight on the desk in my office.)

If u guys can remember what you were doing when it crashed I bet it would be helpful, I had safari (2tabs), calculator, stickies, a game, and one more app up.

This problem is becoming more frequent I think.

personally:

1) my screen goes dark, and my audio fails

2) The automatic graphic switching can help in some cases

3) it happens to me when its getting heated up, and keeping it cool sometimes seems to help.

I'm trying the permission repair thing now, see if i get another crash...

I think the problems is the graphic card is overheating, and the computer just fails until the temp goes down. (which would explain it coming online 10-15 minutes later for some ppl)

Edit: right now i just did the permission repair thing, turned off the graphic switching, and changed some settings to make my comp do less work while running.

I'll let you guys know if I get another crash sometime, and if all the stuff I did helped Ill let you know as well

edit 2: according to someone in this thread my kernel reports are telling me its a logic board issue...any information on this, and what to do? Would fixing it be a handsome lump sum of cash?

I was having this problem since 10.6.6 but it got more frequent after 10.6.7. For me, it happened every time I tried to watch an HD movie using Quicktime and sometimes while adjusting pictures with Aperture or iPhoto or even watching videos on Youtube.

I took the laptop to the Genius Bar and it took almost two weeks to receive it back with a new logic board (replaced under warranty). But at least the problem has gone for good.

So, as ccyu said, if you're having kernel panics as showed in his post, take your unit to Apple and they're gonna fix it for you.

Seriously!! I had this issue 2 times today. I bought this MBP Unibody 2.4Ghz after my MBP 2.4Ghz early 2008 died because of a fault and a very known issue on logicboards.

Im thinking about to sell all the Apple objects in my house and say hi to PC again.

Expensive hardware with serious problems is more often seen on Macs this past/present years.

I think I may need to pay the Genius Bar a visit. I've had 26 panics involving the nvrm read error in the last 3 months. I've had 8 in the last 36 hours alone and it's never tied to the same activity. Some is playing games, some is surfing web, a few times it has been editing documents (I hover over the fruit-s short-cut now out of paranoia). I've tried all of the ideas such as turning off video switching, increasing fan speed, and so on.

I think my logic board must be boned at this point. Unfortunately, my wife's identical 2010 MBP is starting to develop the same problem. She's had 3 panics in the last 2 weeks with the same error.

I just came back from a Genius bar appointment at an Apple Store with a possible solution concerning some of the mid-2010 Macbook Pro random freeze issues. I've had them for a year now, but lately it became more frequent with 2-3 crashes a day.

My MacBook Pro passed all the hardware tests at the Apple Store, so it's very likely a software issue in my case.

The identified cause was the Parallels Desktop 6 extensions that ran in the background. He noticed it thanks to the System Diagnostic Reports in the console (Applications>Utilities>Console), where following lines showed everytime:

He also told me that this problem was identified multiple times with users that had Parallels Desktop 5, but I was the first time one to declare this problem for v.6.

His advice was to either upgrade Parallels to the latest build (and hope the bug is fixed) or uninstall it. If this doesn't work he advised me to reinstall OSX. For now I uninstalled Parallels Desktop and hope that I won't have freezes again... Hopefully this solution will help someone else too.

Well, I have some bad news..

I have MBP 2010 2.53, I had the exact same problem and I took it to AppleCare, they replaced the logic board and the problem disappeard for about 3 months. Now everything is back again! both on bootcamp windows 7 and Snow leopard with the same kernel panic :

I guess something is heating the invidia graphics card and take it to a faulty state. I think that one of the causes is using bootcamp, It happened after I installed bootcamp partition with windows 7 and now it happen again after I installed it again.

At first I run windows 7 with no problems, but after a while I saw the black screens, I reformated windows and tried again - same results. NOW I see the kernel panic with the same black screen on OSX.

Any ideas? should I take it again to AppleCare? why do I have the feeling it will happen again?

Hey guys, so I've been having this problem for a while when using graphics intensive applications, so I think it's definitely something with the logicboard. However, my warranty is now up and I was wondering if anyone knew how much I'd have to pay to get it repaired?

seeing the same problem.

my mid-2010 15" mbp has been in for a logic board replacement twice now. The last replacement was a month ago - and it started acting up again this weekend.

It either boots up with a black/blank screen, or boots up and after 2 to 3 minutes thows all kinds of weird patterns on the display (with and without the power applied)

Read an article mentioning installing smc fan controll - to try and keep the temp down. So far so good - 10 minutes in and it has not yet crashed.

Hope it will fix the problem.

ok no luck. ran fine the whole night - this morning 9 minutes at work and first threw a funny pattern on the screen, and then after a hard reboot - just black screen with a chime in the background looping.

suppose i will have to take it back for a 3rd logic board replacement.

suppose you thats what you get when the sticker says "Made in China"

I just had my logic board replaced for this issue and it fixed the problem. Luckily it was still within the warranty period. Outside of warranty, it would cost $526.50.
