MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

I tried that hardware/kernel panic troubleshooting - my machine crashed while I was running the hardware diagnostics - which could only mean it is hardware that is faulty.

I shipped my machine back to my service provider in my country - they said they will have a look since it is still under warrantee - and let me know if they will just replace the logic board again, or replace the whole laptop.

appearantly they replaced my logic board again (third time now in just more than a year) - if it is still under warrentee they replace it free of charge, but **** this is annoying. And everytime they need to test it for 2 to 3 days to confirm that there is a problem, and then stress test it for 48 hours after they 'found' a replacement logic board, so that it can break 6 months later.

This must be one of apple's worst products to date.

Freeze on boot - Random Freezing plus the Kernel Panic <--all problems I was having

Long Story short..TRICOM(My Authorized Mac Peoples in my area)

Found that by going under > ENERGY SAVER > UN-CHECK "Automatic Graphics Switching" SOLVED ALL MY FREEZING ON BOOT, KERNEL PANICS And Random BEACH BALL PINWHEELE OF HELLISH THINGY!

🙂 I've been 3 weeks free of any problems since they've unchecked that setting and let me know either I had to downgrade back to Snow Leopard, or run with it unchecked so it always uses the Nvidia Video card (Which uses more battery life) unti Apple comes up with the fix for it in Lion.

So since I am hardly without a power outlet I just run my laptop with that unchecked and I have not had any problems since!! My Mac People are great! 🙂 Obviously this is still covered but they said Apple does know about this and so it shouldn't be too much longer before them come out with a fix for it!

LMK If this fixes your issue!!!!

How Too Fix

>>Open SYSTEM PREFERENCES>>Click ENERGY SAVER>> UNCHECK "AUTOMATIC GRAPHICS SWITCHING" -- REBOOT!!!!! All done 🙂

I also have the 2010 MacBook Pro i7 and have had these issues with Lion. There were constant freezing and crashes. I only find it odd that it started happening after they repaired my macbook.

I first had a keyboard issue in which they said was a failure in the both the topcase and logic board, so they replaced it. But I received my MacBook downgraded, and had to go back to get it repaired, yet again. After I received it from its second "repair?", these crashes and freezes were happening like CRAZY. I went back to the genius bar, again for the 3rd time within one week... they said they would take it and put it through extensive hardware testing, they called me 3 hours later and said its because a memory stick was fried, which I don't think was my fault maybe theirs -_-... but im still under warranty for it, so who cares. But as I get home, same stuff. Crashing and Freezing.

So I just decided to clean install Snow Leopard instead. HOPEFULLY it is a software issue and not a hardware, as I only have a little more than month of warranty left on this MacBook. I have tried the "turning off graphic switching" but it didnt really work for me. I am now just using snow leopard, and have only had a one rainbow wheel of death within the last three days.. hopefully it was just Lion...

So your mac was problem free before you upgraded to Lion? Thanks for the information, I'm still on Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro (same configuration as you) and it's solid as a rock, so based on your information I will wait with upgrading the MBP to Lion (I use an iMac with Lion at work which works fine).

That is just plain wrong.

If it is a feature (hardware or software) for your laptop to be able switch between displays to save power, then it should be able to do it. After all, you paid for every feature and switch which is available on your mac - else you might just as well have bought a HP with windblow$ 7.

If their fix is to force your machine to only use either or display, then it means you paid for something, which is a known broken feature/design flaw.

I would demand they replace the logic board, if not your whole machine.

I am on logic board 4 now just outside a year, and if it fails again, I am going to throw toys to get a new machine, and when (not if) they replace it, I don't want one with this stupid nvidia crud.

Nevertheless, if there's a Lion bug here (anyone with Lion and one of these MacBooks that have other experiences?), he provided valuable info. At least to me, I'll just wait for a fix before I upgrade to Lion.

It did not work 😟

When I open Skype, still freeze. The screen goes off and the computer completely freezes. If there is an audio playing, it just repeats the segment when the computer started to freeze.

When Apple releases a patch for this problem?

Sep 9, 2011 3:04 AM in response to Eugene Lazebniy

Guys,

it's NOT just a software problem. Read the other posts: If you have your logic board replaced and are lucky enough, the problems will completely disappear. So why did your MBP run OK until Lion? Most likely due to a driver issue that brings OUT the hardware problem. If you're still under warranty: Try to get a new logic board as soon as possible (quite obviously only if you've eliminated other software problems, starting from a fresh install / external drive etc.). It's the ONLY viable solution here ...

Waiting for a software fix isn't really gonna solve the problem ...

Sep 9, 2011 3:12 AM in response to Eugene Lazebniy

As many have pointed out, this is most likely an issue rooted in hardware. Some machines that crashed rarely in Snow Leopard crashed much more frequently in Lion. Some only started crashing with Lion. In all cases I know of so far, replacing the logic board (twice if you're unlucky) fixed it. Even if Apple comes out with a fix, it won't be a fix for a software bug. It will either be a recall or a firmware patch that runs the graphics chip at a lower speed.

If your computer is still under warranty. Run, not walk, to your nearest Apple store and try to get them to replace your logic board. If not, cross your fingers and hope Apple announces a recall program in the next 3 months.

OK, its very strange that apple is turning a blind eye on this problem..

my MBP is a 15' core i7 with a 512ssd (mid 2010) no after market upgrades

had the freezes before upgrading to lion, but more frequent after lion

I read on some thread that gfxCardStatus fixes the problem.

I installed it , never had a crash since then..

I know it disables the nvidia card but its a great temp fix, until apple addresses their problem..
